Sometimes, it can be hard for an actor to break out of their first few roles. Typecasting is a lot more common than you'd think. Adam Sandler is a perfect example of typecasted actors who broke out of their stereotypical roles. Known for his comedic roles, Sandler played in films like "Happy Gilmore," "50 First Dates," and "Click." Recently, he's played more serious characters in "Uncut Gems" and "Spaceman."
Daniel Radcliffe
Next is more of a bonus actor – Daniel Radcliffe. Technically, he wasn't typecasted but instead played the same role for over a decade as Harry Potter. Even after so many years playing the same character, he broke out of playing the innocent and strong character. After the Harry Potter franchise, he's played in "Swiss Army Man," "The Lost City," and "Beast of Burden."
Matthew McConaughey
Also on our list is Matthew McConaughey. Similarly to Adam Sandler, this actor was frequently cast as a love interest in romantic comedies for his charming personality and face. Tired of playing romantic comedy leads, he looked for more dramatic roles and landed them in "True Detective," "Interstellar," and "Serenity."
Daniel Craig
Daniel Craig frequently plays action heroes and serious characters. For years, he's played secret agent James Bond. He's also starred in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider." This isn't the extent of his career or acting chops. Daniel Craig is also a great comedic actor, starring in movies like "Knives Out" and "Glass Onion."
Robert Pattinson
Robert Pattinson was typecast for years after his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight Franchise, much like Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter series. After and during this role, he starred in other romantic films like "Remember Me" and "Water for Elephants." His typecasting didn't last long as he went on to play roles in action, drama, and comedy films like "Queen of the Desert," "Damsel," and "Mickey 17."
Emma Stone
For years, Emma Stone practically played the same character. She was typecast as the sarcastic love interest in countless movies. Emma Stone played in romantic comedies like "America A," "Magic in the Moonlight," and "Aloha." She is also known for playing Gwen Stacy in the Amazing Spider-Man series and Wichita in "Zombieland." She's since broken out of this character, starring in musicals and dramas. Her latest role, playing a completely different character from usual, was in Poor "Things."
Jonah Hill
Jonah Hill is another typecasted actor. For the longest, he only played comedic roles in films like "The Forty Year Old Virgin," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," and "21 Jump Street." This has since changed as he went on to break his typecasting in the film, "Moneyball."
Bruce Willis
Another typecasted actor is Bruce Willis, but he broke free from his action hero roles. He's played in action films like "The Last Boy Scout," "The Fifth Element," and "Sin City." Apart from these films, he's also known for starring in the Die Hard franchise. He isn't just an action star. Bruce also starred in "Lay the Favorite" and "The Sixth Sense."
Jonathan Krasinski
Jonathan Krasinski has come such a long way since playing Jim in "The Office." While he is a great comedic actor with incredible timing, he's also known for his more serious roles. Jonathan Krasinski starred in more serious roles in "A Quiet Place," Nobody Walks," and "Big Miracle."
Jennifer Lawrence
Also on our list of actors who said 'no' to typecasting is Jennifer Lawrence. Since the Hunger Games series, she was typecasted for more serious roles like Mystique in the X-Men film series. She's also played roles in comedic and dramatic movies. Some of these include "Silver Linings Playbook," "Mother!," and "No Hard Feelings."
Robin Williams
Can you believe Robin Williams was also typecasted for his comedic chops? This comedy legend only played comedic roles for the longest, including in films like "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Aladdin," "Night at the Museum," and "Robots." Apart from these roles, Robin Williams also starred in dramas like "Dead Poets Society," "Good Will Hunting," and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." For his role in "Good Will Hunting," he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Woody Harrelson
Last but not least is Woody Harrelson. He plays a lot of charming characters known for their witty comebacks and sass. Although best known for his comedic roles in "White Men Can't Jump" and "Zombieland," he's also played roles in countless action and thriller films like "No Country for Old Men" and "North Country."
