Sci-fi movies are fun to watch. They are filled with unique storylines and interesting takes on the future. While you can spend your days watching sci-fi classics like "2001: A Space Odyssey," "The Fly," and "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," there are some hidden gems that go underneath the radar.

"The Cell" (2000)
No one talks about "The Cell" enough. This incredible sci-fi horror film stars Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, and Vincent D'Onofrio. The movie received mixed reviews upon its release but is still worth a watch. "The Cell" was nominated for various awards, including an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Makeup/Creature FX.
"Moon" (2009)
Another sci-fi film that deserves higher praise is "Moon." This movie, released in 2009, stars Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey, Dominique McElligott, Kaya Scodelario, and Benedict Wong. "Moon" received a sequel about a decade later titled "Mute." On the Popcormeter on Rotten Tomatoes, "Moon" has an 89%.
"Pitch Black" (2000)
The 2000s was a great time for science fiction films. "Pitch Black" is one of these incredible movies. It has a stellar cast, including Vin Diesel, Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, and Claudia Black. "Pitch Black" is set in space and features aggressive creatures.
"Escape from New York" (1981)
"Escape from New York" is a classic sci-fi movie everybody should watch at least once – especially if you love the genre. This fun R-rated sci-fi film features stars like Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, and Donald Pleasence.
"The Visitor" (1979)
"The Visitor" is a true classic sci-fi film, released in 1979. The set and the costumes are excellent and age well. "The Visitor" is a bit unsettling, featuring aliens, psychic powers, and children. It has an interesting plot and is a great watch on a random Saturday.
"The Faculty" (1998)
"The Faculty" is an R-rated sci-fi horror movie with a cult following. It was moderately successful upon its release but now is even more popular. The movie stars Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Laura Harris, and Josh Hartnett.
"Sunshine" (2007)
Have you ever heard of the 2007 sci-fi film, "Sunshine?" This film is underrated and has an amazing cast. A few cast members include Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh. In this film, the world is going through drastic changes like the sun's death.
"Species" (1995)
Lastly is "Species," a 1995 film. Truly, the most incredible part of this movie is the makeup and costume design. The creatures are frightening and strange-looking. While not a perfect movie, it's fun to watch with friends.
