Just as every great movie has a hero, that one character who fights for what is right and always saves the day, no movie is complete without a proper villain, that character who is the antithesis of all the hero stands for. Every action movie needs a good villain to drive the story arc. After all, a hero can't fight against evil if there is no evil to fight against.

But not all villains excel at being, well, villains. Whether it's how the character was written or how the actor portrayed the role, some villains are just better than others. Building the right villain is a crucial part of creating a compelling narrative for an action film. Some villains connect with viewers because they may come across as a bit more sympathetic and human. Others are the typical evil archetype that can help create the perfect foil for the heroic main character.

To find the top action movie villains of all time, 24/7 Tempo focused on finding villains that were highly memorable in their specific roles, and for being particularly noteworthy depending on what type of villain they were. We aimed to find villains across the whole spectrum of archetypes as well as from different types of action movies. (Real-life villains, like the top Sinaloa cartel leaders, which includes the son of El Chapo, have recently been arrested.)

It should be noted that the information presented here is opinion-based, and although we ensured a good representation of the various styles of filmmaking, what we found to be the top action movie villains might differ from what someone else might find. (When you're done with this list, check out the 20 best action films of all time.)
