The Hollywood film industry releases hundreds of films each year, and while some are spectacular, opening to rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike, not every movie can be a hit. With the high amount of releases per year, month, or weekly, even great movies don't often do as well as studios anticipated. This lowers the odds of success for many films that don't enjoy the same cinematic praises, leaving audiences to wonder why they should even bother.

Not all movies can be good. For every "Godfather," or "Scarface," there is a "Gigli," or "Glitter," and these bad movies can be a culmination of many things. Poor direction or screenwriting, bad special effects, and most of all, unsuitable casting can all contribute to a lousy movie in their own ways. But there is an immense difference between a standard bad movie and those that are considered the most awful movies ever made.

There are often great movies that receive some negative reviews, after all, it's hard to please everyone, but movies that are so bad they receive nothing but awful reviews are rather unique. Even cult classics known for being bad like "The Room" (2003) and "Birdemic: Shock and Terror" (2010) received some positivity from critics.

To determine the most awful movies ever made, according to critics, we used aggregator websites such as Rotten Tomatoes. Very few movies manage to score a true 0% on the Tomatometer. Additionally, many critically bad movies have decent audience scores. An audience isn't watching a movie to critique and people typically find enjoyment in most movies because, unlike critics, the general audience doesn't have to take a movie seriously.
