The Most Powerful Prison Films Ever Put on Screen, Ranked by Ratings and Reviews

Prison films have captured the imagination of moviegoers for decades, with these stories unfolding behind bars, tapping into themes of isolation, injustice, redemption, and survival. The setting is as symbolic as it is literal; characters are stripped of freedom and forced to confront themselves, each other, and often, a brutal system.

However, not all prison films aim for realism. Some lean into action or historical themes. But the most impactful prison movies manage to depict the true weight of confinement. In recent years, the genre has expanded to include stories of prisoners of war, youth detention, and institutional corruption around the globe. But what films manage to highlight the true weight of incarceration and its themes?

To determine the greatest prison films of all time, 24/7 Tempo developed a weighted index using IMDb ratings, Rotten Tomatoes audience scores, and Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer scores. All films included had at least 1,000 IMDb reviews. Additionally, while many of these titles are fictional, documentaries were not excluded. Let's take a look at these unforgettable films now.
