Classic 1960s Snacks That Need a Revival
Snacks. That small indulgence in between meals that helps us forge on, thoughts of hunger temporarily banished until the next meal. Since ancient times, when people would snack on leftover foods between meals, snacks have been a part of cultures, and while others may take it to heightened levels, there's no denying that these small bites can be an essential part of our diets.
This mid-day nibble between meals has also become an evening standard, something we can partake in while watching on favorite shows. Nothing goes better with television than a snack and for children coming of age in the 1960s, crunch time almost went hand in hand with watching their favorite TV programs. The snacks of yesteryear may not have been the best for us, but we yearned for them as we sat watching "The Brady Bunch," or "Flipper".
Even though the offerings of today are plentiful – both healthy and questionable – there are certain bites of the past that we long for. A nostalgia harkening back to our youth when snacks were obligatory in our school lunch boxes. (If you always enjoyed snacking on deli meats, be aware of the Listeria outbreak linked to your favorite snack.)
To compile a list of classic 1960s snacks that need a revival, 24/7 Tempo has consulted sources such as the Daily Meal, Snack Stack, Click Americana, MeTV, Snack History, General Mills, Groceries Gone But Not Forgotten, and Newsweek. Many of these snack options have vanished from grocery store shelves for years, and in certain instances, decades. (From various eras, here's a list of popular discontinued snack foods we really miss.)
Various factors contributed to the demise of these snacks from insufficient sales compared to revenue expectations, the product not aligning with new corporate strategies (frequently due to acquisitions by a different company), or a shift in public preferences towards healthier options. (Here are healthy versions of old-school junk-food snacks you want to try.)
Note that some products that went the way of the dodo bird are versions of other beloved items that remain on the shelves, and in some cases, the originals themselves might still be sold in other countries. This doesn't help generations of disappointed consumers who simply want their favorite snacks back. They have even used influential social media platforms like Change.org and iPetitions to pressure companies into resurrecting beloved snacks, to some success.
