The American Kennel Club is a non-profit organization founded in 1884, and according to its mission statement is "dedicated to upholding the integrity of its Registry, promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function." The organization is considered a leading authority on dogs and is the world's oldest and largest all-breed registry. As of March 2024, the AKC recognizes 201 dog breeds. By comparison, the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), recognizes 360. This makes the newest additions to the canine world all the more impressive.

Becoming a recognized AKC breed is not an easy path. Step one is for a breed to have a presence in the U.S., usually in the form of a parent organization that sets, maintains, and assesses pedigrees for the breed. If many people import dogs or an individual dog breeder becomes very successful in the U.S. an individual or group that isn't a club can apply to the AKC. The breed then enters the Foundation Stock Service (FSS) which tracks the litters and provides the official documentation necessary to become an officially recognized breed. (Don't miss the 21 longest-living companion dog breeds.)
