Making a movie is more than just yelling action. Directors have a long checklist to go through – location shoots, schedules, budgets, actors – and it's difficult to know if a movie will be a hit. A potential film may have all the components necessary for the makings of a Hollywood blockbuster – a perfectly written script, a spot-on cast, and an excellent musical score – yet it doesn't always translate to success. There is always a probability that things can and will go wrong and for these iconic directors and their biggest box office failures, this is exactly what happened.

To identify iconic directors and their biggest box office failures, 24/7 Tempo analyzed data on worldwide box office earnings and production budgets from The Numbers, a subsidiary of Nash Information Services. Directors were ranked based on the percentage of films in their filmography that earned less than their production budget at the global box office. Only directors with at least 10 movies for which production budget and worldwide box office data were available were considered.

The biggest hits and flops were determined based on the average return on investment, calculated as the amount earned at the global box office per $1 of the production budget. (Don't miss the most awful movies ever made.)
