Sly Stone passed away on June 9, 2025, at 82 years old due to underlying health issues and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This legendary funk artist deserves a celebration for his contributions to soul, gospel, and rock. To honor this incredible man, let's dive into his life, music, and accomplishments.
Sly Stone's Early Life
Sly Stone was born on March 15, 1943, in Denton, Texas. Although he was born in Texas, his family soon moved to Vallejo, California. He was one of five siblings, all incredibly talented musically. Music was encouraged as a form of self-expression from a young age. Sly Stone was a musical prodigy, learning how to play the piano/keyboard, drums, and bass as a child. By age 5, he contributed to an album.
Sly and the Family Stone
Sly Stone is best known for his involvement in the family band, Sly and the Family Stone. This funk band was formed in 1960 and was active until 1983. They performed a few times after but stopped releasing new music. Sly and the Family Stone consisted of Freddie Stone, Sly Stone, Rose Stone, Larry Graham, Cynthia Robinson, Jerry Martini, and Greg Errico. They were the first mainstream and popular band to racially integrate and feature members of different genders.
Sly and the Family Stone's Music
Although primarily a funk band, Sly and the Family Stone played with different styles of music which helped to develop R&B, rock, soul, and psychedelic music. Although active since 1967, their first song to hit the Billboard Hot 100 was "Dance to the Music" in 1967. It reached spot 8 and launched the band to stardom.
