According to the International Spy Museum, the definition of espionage is "the act of spying or using spies, agents, assets, and intelligence officers, as well as technology, to collect secret information, usually through illegal means." This characterizes the female spies who risked it all for their country perfectly.

Spies have long been a part of history and have used many methods to gather intelligence. Through human relationships, secret communication, technology, and more, they have put aside their own safety for the good of their nation.

From the Revolutionary War to World War II, the female spies below were some of the most well-known throughout American history. Some have been honored for their efforts, while others ended up imprisoned, or worse, killed for their espionage efforts.

To compile this list of female spies who risked it all for their country, 24/7 Tempo consulted various sources including Intellegenc.gov, CIA.gov, and the Smithsonian. (Click here to check out 14 Americans currently in prison for espionage.)
