Don't believe anyone who says scandals are a modern invention. The Golden Age of Hollywood had enough gossip and intrigue to rival any era. From public affairs and messy divorces to mysterious deaths splashed across newspaper headlines, classic cinema was filled with drama both on and off the screen. Here are some of the most unforgettable Old Hollywood scandals you may have forgotten���or never knew about.
Charlie Chaplin and His Communist Ties
Charlie Chaplin, known for his comedic skills and silent films, was constantly caught in scandals. One of the most shocking actually had his entry to the United States denied. Publicly, this large actor was accused of having close ties and friendships with communists. Around the same time, he was also being scrutinized for his romantic relationships as he frequently dated much younger women. The FBI launched an investigation on Chaplin, compiling a hefty 1,900-page file on the man.
Ingrid Bergman's Public Affair
Another classic and shocking Hollywood scandal involved Ingrid Bergman, a very well-known actress at the time. During her film career, she won three Academy Awards and four Golden Globes. So, what did this Swedish actress do? In 1949, Bergman publicly left her husband and child while pursuing an affair with Italian film director Roberto Rossellini. This caused an uproar when released to the public as divorce was seen as a big taboo at the time.
Elizabeth Taylor's Many Love Scandals
Elizabeth Taylor was constantly found in multiple messy love affairs and scandals. This incredible actress was married eight times and had even more partners. The number of partners isn't a big deal, but instead, the fact that many were married. One of her most well-known affair partners was Richard Burton. They actually got married twice. Their first marriage was just ten days after Taylor's divorce from Eddie Fisher.
Natalie Wood's Mysterious and Sudden Death
Mysterious deaths are hard to keep our eyes and minds away from. They leave us with so many unanswered questions and confusing thoughts. This is the case with Natalie Wood's death ���which we still know very little about. Natalie Wood was an American actress with a long list of film credits, including "Miracle on 34th Street." At the young age of 43, she passed away under mysterious circumstances. Her body was found in the water, and her death was officially ruled accidental drowning and hypothermia. While this may seem clear, cut, and dry, her body was covered in bruises, and she argued with her husband before passing away.
Paul Bern's Strange and Untimely Death
Another strange death to make our slideshow is the supposed suicide of Paul Bern, a famous director and screenwriter. He passed away only two months after marrying Jean Harlow, who also strangely passed away. Bern was found in his home on September 5, 1932, dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Left behind was a suicide note. While the world looked at his wife for his death, she was never found guilty. Jean Harlow, just a few short years later, died of kidney failure unexpectedly.
Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich's Potential Secret Love Story
Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich were both incredible actors during the Golden Age of Hollywood. While they starred in similar films and roles, they were often pitted against each other. Still, there were rumors that the two were actually secretly friends, and maybe even lovers. They spent decades denying they knew each other or had ever met. Could it be because of a love story gone wrong? We'll likely never know, but people continue theorizing decades later.
Jerry Lee Lewis Marrying His Much Younger Cousin
Jerry Lee Lewis turned a lot of his head when he married his first cousin, once removed in 1957. This shocking headline sparked fury and confusion across the world and damaged his rock and roll career. At the age of 22, the musician married Myra Lewis Williams, who was only 13 at the time. While some people have stated she was actually 15, it makes little difference. The two divorced in 1970.
Loretta Young Adopted Her Biological Daughter
Last but not least is a scandal involving Loretta Young, an American actress who didn't want her career to burn. Loretta, who was unwed at the time, adopted a young girl named Judith. But there was so much more to this story. Judith was Loretta's biological daughter. She had her in secret and moved her from orphanage to hideaway until she adopted her and revealed her to the public. Loretta had a romance with Clark Gable, who was married during the affair. When she fell pregnant, she did all she could to hide it, scared to lose opportunities. She also feared the studio would pressure her into an abortion.
