Hundreds of movies are released in the United States every year. It's never a guarantee that any film will be successful but some generally have certain indicators that they'll be well on their way to blockbuster status. For those movies that do make it big, both with the public and financially, it can still be hard to guess whether they will endure through the years. Certain films make their marks in history – regardless of whether you've seen them, everyone knows of "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," or "Star Wars" because they are just that influential. But not every movie can be an icon, remembered for generations to come.

Even with stellar opening weekends at the box office and an all-star cast, many R-rated films fall by the wayside. There are plenty of blockbuster R-rated films that were once big hits that no one remembers, and even now, the odds of the current crop of movies in theaters at the top of the box office rankings being remembered this time next year are relatively slim. (For other obscure but great movies, discover the best R-rated movies you probably haven't seen.)

To compile a list of blockbuster R-rated films no one remembers, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of movie and entertainment publications including CinemaBlend.com, Reddit.com, and Gamesradar.com. We then selected movies that earned huge box office openings before falling into obscurity in the ensuing years and confirmed aspects of each movie using sites like IMDB.com and Rottentomatoes.com.
