20 Actors Who Missed Out on Iconic Roles (and Regretted It)

Choosing the right actor for a role can take months or even years, making “movie magic” all the more lackluster. In some cases, the performer originally cast isn’t even the one who ends up on screen. Behind some of Hollywood’s most iconic characters are surprising stories of near-misses, scheduling conflicts, and last-minute replacements that changed film history forever.

Dozens of recognizable actors have nearly stepped into roles that are now inseparable from someone else. Whether they turned down a part, lost it due to contract complications, or were simply passed over at the final moment, these casting what-ifs reveal a hidden layer of the movie-making process.

Today, 247 Tempo explores 20 fascinating examples of actors who almost played iconic roles, and the alternate film universes that could have been. The stories are drawn from reporting in Variety, Insider, Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, and Collider, all of which have documented the behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped some of Hollywood’s most beloved films and roles.

Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt almost played Black Widow in the “Avengers” movies. She was the first choice for this role but turned it down due to contract issues. Still, she’s had an amazing career starring in films like “A Quiet Place” and “Oppenheimer.”

In another universe, Matthew McConaughey played Jack in “Titanic.” This could have been a reality, but ultimately, Leonardo DiCaprio was given the iconic and life-changing role. Interestingly, McConaughey assumed he was a shoo-in for the part as his audition went excellently. Even with this rejection, he’s gone on to act in films like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Will Smith

Will Smith is a legend in the film industry starring in some of the most well-known and beloved series. Did you know he almost played Neo in “The Matrix?” While he was offered the role, Smith turned it down. This didn’t mean much as his career only continued to grow by starring in films like “I Am Legend ” and “I, Robot.”

Sandra Bullock

A few actresses were asked to play Vivian in “Pretty Woman” but declined the role, including Sandra Bullock. While she may regret this decision, it did nothing to hurt her career. Bullock has since starred in “Miss Congeniality” and “The Blind Side.”

Eric Stoltz

“Back to the Future” could have looked very different. The original actor cast to play Marty McFly was Eric Stoltz, but he was ultimately fired and replaced by Michael J. Fix. Since then, Stoltz has starred in “Pulp Fiction” and “Little Women.”

Leonardo DiCaprio

Can you picture Leonardo DiCaprio playing Patrick Bateman? This almost happened when Mary Harron, the director of “American Psycho” was fired after not wanting DiCaprio to play the role. When brought back into the film, Christian Bale was cast in this iconic role.

Glenn Howerton

Glenn Howerton was close to playing Peter Quill in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The role eventually went to Chris Pratt, but it’s funny to imagine the films with a gritty and sarcastic Glenn Howerton. Howerton has played roles in “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “A.P. Bio.”

Steve Carell

No one will ever top Heath Ledger’s performance of the Joker, but did you know that Steve Carell almost played this iconic character? While Steve Carell hoped to get this role, it didn’t happen. Instead, he went on to star in “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “Beautiful Boy.”

Jim Carrey

Can you picture Jim Carrey playing the main character in “Elf,” Buddy? Well – he almost did. When “Elf” was drafted, Jim Carrey was the original pick. Ten years after the script was completed, Jim Carrey dropped out, and Will Ferrell took his place. This didn’t do much to Jim Carrey’s career as he went on to star in his own incredibly known Christmas film, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”

Kevin Costner

Cast changes are common in movies. Before Tim Robbins played Andy in “The Shawshank Redemption,” the role was for Kevin Costner. He turned it down for “Waterworld.”

Matt Damon

Matt Damon was almost in the film “Avatar.” He turned down the role because he was in a contract for the Bourne movies. Damon would have made $250 million from the film. Although he still thinks about this, Matt Damon is a star in his own right known for movies like “Saving Private Ryan” and “Ocean’s Twelve.”

Nicole Kidman

A scheduling conflict prevented Nicole Kidman from starring in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” alongside Brad Pitt. This led to Angelina Jolie’s role in the film. Kidman, though, has been in plenty of films including, “Practical Magic” and “Aquaman.”

Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck was almost Indiana Jones, but this role went to Harrison Ford as Selleck struggled with scheduling conflicts for the movie, “Magnum, P.I.” Other films and shows he’s been in are “High Road to China” and “Blue Bloods.”

Christina Applegate

“Legally Blonde” could have looked a bit different if Christina Applegate hadn’t turned down the role of Elle. While she would have done an excellent job, Reese Witherspoon’s portrayal is perfect. Still, this didn’t hurt Applegate’s career as she starred in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and “The Book of Life.”

Jennifer Connelly

Jennifer Connelly was the first choice to play Veronica Sawyer in “Heathers,” but this role went to Winona Ryder. This “Labyrinth” star has starred in many hits like “A Beautiful Mind” and “He’s Just Not That Into You.”

Jason Momoa

Can you imagine Jason Momoa playing Drax in “Guardians of the Galaxy?” This was almost the reality. He turned down the role after an amazing audition because the character Drax was too similar to other characters he had already played. Momoa didn’t want to be put in a box.

Patrick McGoohan

Sean Connery was almost not cast in the James Bond films. The original actor producers wanted was Patrick McGoohan. He turned down this iconic role for moral reasons, as the character didn’t match his character. McGoohan was a devout Catholic and starred in “Danger Man” and “The Prisoner.”

David Schwimmer

“Friends” superstar David Schwimmer was offered a role in “Men in Black” but turned it down. Instead of joining this film, Schwimmer focused on directing. Since then he’s starred in “Madagascar” and “Intelligence.”

Shia LaBeouf nearly played a role in the romantic drama “Call Me By Your Name.” While his audition was strong, Armie Hammer’s chemistry with Timothée Chalamet was stronger. Shia LaBeouf is best known for his role in the Transformers series and as Stanley Yelnats IV in “Holes.”

Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams turned down a role in “The Devil Wears Prada” while taking a break from acting. She turned down the offer three times. While it could have given her more exposure, it didn’t hurt her too much. She continued to star in films like “The Little Prince” and “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret..”
