The Old Fashioned is a popular drink in many places, most notably Wisconsin (where it is the official state cocktail), Louisville, Kentucky, and New York City. It is a staple in American culture and has been for centuries, a classic cocktail made with a spirit of choice – typically bourbon, rye, or whiskey – sweetener, bitters, and a citrus garnish.

There is debate as to whether it originated in New York City or Louisville, but wherever it began, there's no denying its popularity and there have been many deviations from the original recipe, with brandy, gin, and even mezcal replacing the original spirit of choice. Old Fashioneds are thought of as a classy and upscale cocktail and no matter where you are, it's always a great choice. (Click here to uncover the world's 25 most popular cocktails.)
