When we go out, whether with friends for a night on the town or perhaps on vacation to a tropical local, we often visit bars or restaurants that offer delicious and potent potables. Some drinks often appear like they would be rather refreshing. Other drinks seem as though they might be full of flavor. Whatever you choose, you want a beverage that won't leave you regretting your choices. Either that night or the morning after.

Not all drinks are wise choices. Specialty cocktails are often good for just that – a special occasion where you have one drink and call it a night, and certain drinks are difficult to prepare when an establishment is busy – like a mojito, often said to be a bartender's nemesis. But you prefer a tasty cocktail, and would rather have one than a beer. Unless you're a bartender, you probably aren't too familiar with what's going on behind the counter, so it's best to be prepared.

By knowing what type of drink you want before you go, you can save yourself the potential drink returns when you taste a beverage not quite up to your palate. You should know if you prefer gin, vodka, whiskey, or tequila, or if you like a sour flavor, a sweet flavor, or something more herbaceous.

Bartenders aren't able to deduce the likes and dislikes of their clientele. To avoid wasting your time – and theirs – it's always best to walk in knowing which drinks to avoid and which drinks to order instead. As a last resort, you can always ask your mixologist's opinion. It might differ from yours but they also might get it right. (People also have differing opinions on sports but it's hard to deny the greatness of Olympian Ilona Maher, a member of the U.S. women's rugby team.)

To comprise a list of bar drinks to avoid and what to order instead, 247 Tempo reviewed sites like Liquor.com for drink recipes, and Reddit for uncensored opinions, and consulted with a bartender who has been in the industry for nearly 20 years. (Take a look at the 30 oldest beers in America.)
