With the new R-rated Will Smith and Martin Lawrence action film "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hitting theaters, it seemed like a good time to talk about some of the other R-rated films that have changed the movie scene over the course of time. The R-rating began in 1968. Back then, the ratings were voluntary. Now, all movies must be rated, and if children under 17 want to see an R-rated film, they must be accompanied by an adult. There have been many great films in this category over the years, and we created a list of what are widely considered to be the most iconic R-rated movies ever made.

You'll see many great movies on this list, including some of the wildest and raunchiest comedies ever made, ranging from "Wedding Crashers" to "The Hangover" to "There's Something About Mary." There are also some very graphic films that worked hard for the R-rating, such as "Goodfellas," "The Passion of the Christ," and "It." This list also features some very groundbreaking movies that changed the face of cinema. We're talking about classics like "The Matrix," "Deadpool," and "Oppenheimer." Truth be told, there is something for everyone on this list – provided that they're at least 17 years of age.

To determine the most iconic R-rated movies ever made, 24/7 Tempo checked in with the experts on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes. We also reviewed some of the most important pop culture sources, including Billboard and Comic Book Resources. We believe you'll find one of your favorite movies on this list.
