Americans are fascinated by legal dramas, a genre that consistently ranks as one of the more popular film varieties. Legal dramas have been around since the beginning of the film industry, with movies like the short, silent film, "Falsely Accused!". They only gained in popularity as time went on with the 1957 films, "12 Angry Men" (1957) and "Witness for the Prosecution". The best courtroom dramas draw the audience in with compelling and convincing scenes.

The ethical intrigue these legal dramas offer often reflects real life and illustrates how difficult it can be to uphold the justice system. At the same time, we are given insight into an imperfect system, one that often falls short of upholding the moral integrity of the courts. Courtroom dramas can be both entertaining in comedic ways – as evidenced in the film "Legally Blonde," or in heartbreaking ways, like in the film "To Kill a Mockingbird."

To determine the most compelling legal dramas in film history, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of May 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Documentaries were not considered. Director information is from IMDb.
