In other parts of the world, baking establishments are stand-alone locations and in countries like France, that take their baked goods rather seriously as one should, they even have distinct separate places to buy them. Delicious treats like croissants, pain au chocolate, madeleines, and baba au rhum are purchased at a pâtisserie, or pastry shop, while bread items like baguettes (where you can choose amongst four different types) are purchased at a boulangerie, or bread bakery.
But in the United States, we tend to meld the two together, and our bakeries typically sell a wide range of flour-based (and/or gluten-free) baked goods, including breads, rolls, pastries, cakes and pies, and doughnuts, among other items. We may not have strict rules for baking like the French (to be called a boulangerie, the goods must be made on-site), but if there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that every city and town needs a good bakery. (Some shops do cater to one specific baked good, of course, like the best donut shop in every state. while )
Regardless of where you purchase your heavenly treats, what is true of all baking is that it demands meticulousness, unlike many other fields. The timing must be precise and measurements must be exact, and even one tiny error can ruin a batch. Scaling decadent dough-kneading, bun-rolling, and bread-baking into a daily business only amplifies the attention to detail required. Commercial ovens must perfectly recreate recipes reliant on ingredient ratios measured to the gram. Yeast proves fickle, needing just the right conditions to work its magic before sending creations to bake at exactly this temperature, for precisely that duration.
Running a bakery takes monumental patience paired with business savvy to stay afloat, and thankfully, numerous individuals take on these tasks daily to bring us the most delicious array of baked goods. But not all are created equal. Some are far superior and demonstrate just how incredible they are with their offerings. (If pastries and bread items aren't for you, you can grab a smoothie for a treat so refreshing and adored, it even has its own day – National Smoothie Day.)
To determine the must-visit bakery in every state, 24/7 Tempo reviewed articles and rankings on a variety of sites including Eater, Taste of Home, Love Food, and Business Insider, as well as local and regional sources, basing our final choices on editorial discretion. Certain examples feature baked goods native to Latin America or Central Europe, while others offer specialties popular in their corners of the country – like klobásníky (stuffed rolls) in Texas or mochi donuts in Hawaii. (This is the most iconic dessert in every state.)
Here is the must-visit bakery in every state.
