Songs That Stayed the Longest At No. 1 on the Hot 100

Songs That Stayed the Longest At No. 1 on the Hot 100

The method by which you listen to your favorite tunes has changed over the years. You may still have a record player, which is perfect for the vinyl copies of Coldplay’s upcoming album, “Moon Music” (2024). You may have owned a boom box, and may remember the days of rolled down windows and cassettes in car stereos. Today, you can also indulge your favorites via bluetooth headphones directly from your curated playlists on any one of the many available platforms for playing music.

Music has a way of transporting you, lifting you up on the days you feel down and lifting you even higher on the days you’re blissed out. Music can also help you process your sadness as you cry along with lyrics you swear are about your life. When you want to rage, there’s a song for that too. When you want to dance, the options are endless to get you boogieing into the night.

In the U.S., there is the Billboard Hot 100, which ranks the most popular singles on a weekly basis. Some songs are so beloved, they linger on the charts for weeks on end. Take Montell Jordan’s hit song, “This Is How We Do It” (1995), which remained on the Top 100 for 29 weeks, making it to the No. 1 spot for a total of seven weeks. There are collaborations like “Despacito” (2017) by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, featuring Justin Bieber, that stayed in the Top 100 for 51 weeks and spent an impressive 16 weeks in the No.1 spot. But there’s one song that beat out that 16-week run—here’s a hint: it’s another collaboration.

To determine the songs that stayed the longest at No. 1 on the Hot 100, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical data on chart performance from the Billboard Hot 100. Songs were ranked based on the total number of weeks for which they were at the No. 1 position on the Hot 100 charts. Chart data is current through June 8, 2024.
