Most Popular Albums of 2023

Country music and rap had big years in 2023, dominating the Billboard 200 top album charts.

To determine the most popular albums of 2023, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on chart performance from Billboard magazine. Albums released in 2023 were ranked based on an inverse scoring system wherein a week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 is worth 200 points, a week at No. 2 worth 199 points, and so on, up to a week at No. 200 worth one point. Billboard 200 data is through December 2, 2023. (For a similar list, but focusing on singles, click here for the songs with the longest stays on the Hot 100 this year.)

Country music extended its crossover success in 2023 as reflected in the number of albums that were among the year’s top 10 on Billboard 200. Six different country artists — Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, HARDY, Bailey Zimmerman, Jordan Davis, and Jelly Roll — held positions in the top 10.

Rap was well-represented up and down the list with performers such as Lil Durk, Gunna, Ice Spice, Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, and Lil Wayne.

Spanish stars populated the list as well. Colombian singer Karol G had the second-biggest album of the year, “Manana Sera Bonito” (one of 12 LPs to reach No. 1 on this list), and was the only artist to have a second LP on the list with “Manana Sera Bonito (Bichota Season).” Peso Pluma, Eslabon Armado, Melanie Martinez, and Rylo Rodriguez were other Spanish artists with hit albums.

Taylor Swift made the list with the release of “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” her 12th No. 1 album. For the week ending July 22, she had four albums in the top 10, equalling a feat by Prince and Herb Alpert.

Other noteworthy LPs on this list are the soundtrack for the blockbuster film “Barbie,” and the remastered “Creedence Clearwater Revival, Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits.” (Here is a list of old songs that actually came back in 2023.)
