Some of the biggest artist debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023 were Latin music artists, particularly those whose roots are from Mexico, and rappers.
To determine the biggest Billboard artist debuts of 2023, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on chart performance from Billboard magazine. Artists were ranked based on an inverse scoring system wherein a week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 is worth 100 points, a week at No. 2 worth 99 points, and so on, up to a week at No. 100 worth one point. Only artists whose first appearance on the Hot 100 was in 2023 were considered. Chart data is current through Dec. 2, 2023.
Peso Pluma, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist from Guadalajara, Mexico, enjoyed a major breakout year, taking música mexicana global in 2023. The 23-year-old placed 21 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 where they spent a total of 241 weeks. His LP “Génesis” was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Other Latin performers having big years in 2023 included Fuerza Regida, Junior H, Yng Lvcas, and Gabito Ballesteros.
For the music class of 2023, female rapper Ice Spice had gold singles “Munch (Feelin’ U),” and “In Ha Mood,” and the collaboration with PinkPantheress “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2.” Ice Spice, who found initial viral success on TikTok, had seven songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100 for a total of 115 weeks. These included collaborations with Taylor Swift (“Karma”) and Nicki Minaj (“Princess Diana”) that reached the top 10. Other rookie rappers charting on the Billboard Hot 100 were Toosii, Doechii, and Sexyy Red.
We know about the success of K-pop boy bands such as BTS and Stray Kids, but 2023 also saw breakthrough performances by all-girls South Korean groups, including NewJeans and Fifty Fifty. (When it comes to albums, though, these are the most popular albums of 2023.)
