One-Hit Rock ‘n Roll Albums That Had a Massive Impact

The music industry has significantly impacted many of our lives throughout the years. Whether we were born in the time of the Big Band Era and listened to Duke Ellington or felt the music of Elvis Presley during the 1950s, songs, and rock 'n roll in particular, were incredibly influential not only on the lives of people but often on the ways of the world. Rock music contributed to social and cultural changes, transforming the industry in many ways.

Since the genre originated, rock bands like The Beatles, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, and Journey have taken the world by storm and created music that will go down in rock 'n roll history. The many types of rock music today include classic, alternative, hard rock, and grunge, and each type has had a unique influence on the music industry.

As rock music continues to evolve and events such as Mayhem Festival 2024 keep the love for all things metal alive, it's interesting to look back on the musicians who paved the way. Even though many rock artists and albums have become an important part of music history, not every rock band has numerous hit albums. To create a list of one-hit rock 'n roll albums that had a massive impact, 24/7 Tempo consulted sources such as Rolling Stone, ABC News, and Forbes. We created a list of 10 rock 'n roll bands with one hit album in no particular order.

• Hit album: "Blind Faith"

In 1969, the English rock band Blind Faith released their only album. This self-titled album hit the top of the music charts in the US, UK, and Canada. "Blind Faith" included singles such as "Well All Right" and "Can't Find My Way Home."

• Hit album: "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols"

The Sex Pistols started as a band called The Strand but after John Lyndon joined, they became the Sex Pistols. Lyndon, lead singer of the Sex Pistols, later became known as Johnny Rotten. The band only released one studio album, "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols," which hit number one on the charts in the UK.

• Hit album: "Grace"

Jeff Buckley was an alternative and folk-rock singer who started as a cover artist. After he began gaining attention from record labels, he found a band to play with him and started recording. In 1994, Jeff Buckley released his only studio album, "Grace." Tragically, Buckley died three years later in an accidental drowning.

• Hit album: "Pulsars"

The indie rock band The Pulsars was comprised of Dave and Harry Trumfio, two brothers who played music together growing up. They released their debut album, "The Pulsars" in 1997, combining the sounds of new wave and indie rock with futuristic topics such as aliens. Although they split up before finishing a second album, they released a collection of previously unreleased songs in 2021.

• Hit album: "The La's"

English rock band, The La's, were known mostly for their hit song "There She Goes." This band only released one studio album in 1990. This album made NME's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and Rolling Stone's List of 40 Greatest One-Album Wonders.

• Hit album: "Temple of the Dog"

Chris Cornell, the former singer of Soundgarden, started the alternative rock group Temple of the Dog in the early 1990s along with musicians Phil Harris and Andrew Wood. After Wood died in 1990 of an overdose, Cornell wrote two songs in memory of his friend and former band member. Temple of the Dog released their only album in 1991.

• Hit album: "Just Keep Eating"

While Scratch Acid was one of the first bands to experiment with noise rock, their career as a band didn't last long. Their only full-length album, titled "Just Keep Eating," was released in 1986. Spex, a German rock magazine, ranked the album as number 34 on the list of Albums of the Year.

• Hit album: "Psychotic Reaction"

Two high school friends created the garage rock band Count Five, even though Count Five wasn't the band's first name. For those who saw Count Five perform live, one of the most notable parts of their performance was the Dracula capes they often wore. Count Five released one studio album, "Psychotic Reaction," in 1966.

• Hit album: "The United States of America"

Experimental rock group The United States of America released their only album in 1968. This album ranked as number 181 on the Billboard 200. The United States of America broke up shortly after the release of their studio album due to tensions between the band members.

• Hit album: "Burning Tree"

Burning Tree, a blues and hard rock band from California, was created by the former members of Citadel. This trio released their first album in 1990 which had mixed reviews but the band focused on touring England after the release of their album. After the band broke up, the members continued their careers in the music industry elsewhere but got back together to perform at several reunion shows over the years.
