Movies That Showcase Cape Cod and Coastal Massachusetts

Movies That Showcase Cape Cod and Coastal Massachusetts

Cape Cod has a surprisingly strong presence in movie history. It’s a wonderful location for stories of seaside towns, summer vacations, and wealthy families. The region has some of the prettiest coastal scenery in the U.S. These films weren’t just shot on Cape Cod or the surrounding islands; they make the region itself an important part of the story or atmosphere.

Jaws (1975)

Although Jaws takes place on a fictional island and was mainly filmed on Martha’s Vineyard, it captures the Cape Cod vibe. It is full of beaches and architecture that people associate with Cape Cod and the surrounding Massachusetts coast. Amity, the fictional island, is a tourist community that makes most of its money during the summer beach season, which is very reminiscent of Cape Cod. When a great white shark begins attacking swimmers, local officials try to keep the beaches open and tourism in full swing. Throughout the film, we see vacationer-filled beaches, harbors, fishing boats, weathered houses, and bustling summer streets. Few movies have captured the feel of a New England beach town during summer quite as effectively.

The Finest Hours (2016)

This Disney survival drama is based on the real 1952 rescue of the crew of the SS Pendleton off Cape Cod. Coast Guardsmen leave Chatham in a tiny motor lifeboat and head into a harsh winter storm. Essential to the story are the Cape’s dangerous waters and seaside culture. Chatham and the surrounding coastline are depicted and frequently referenced, even though some of the footage is from other areas of Massachusetts. This natural disaster movie shows a much gloomier version of Cape Cod than the sunny summer beaches tourists normally see.

The Lightkeepers (2009)

Set on Cape Cod in 1912, The Lightkeepers follows a lighthouse keeper who has sworn off women. Everything is going according to plan until two unexpected visitors complicate his loner existence. The movie is almost a love letter to Cape Cod, leaning heavily into classic imagery, including white dunes, long beaches, cute cottages, and windy coastlines. It was filmed extensively around the Cape, including areas near Dennis and Chatham. The isolated lighthouse setting makes the story feel even more apart from modern resort towns. This movie shows a picturesque, old-fashioned version of Cape Cod.

One Crazy Summer (1986)

This John Cusack comedy follows a group of teenagers spending their summer on Nantucket. While Nantucket is technically a separate island south of Cape Cod, the movie is strongly tied to the region. The plot is ridiculous, seemingly on purpose, involving everything from romance and cartoonists to boat races and a battle against wealthy land developers. Nantucket’s beaches, harbor, streets, and summer atmosphere frequently appear, creating the overall vibe of the film. It’s a great depiction of the slightly chaotic feeling of a New England tourist town during peak season.

Summer Catch (2001)

Summer Catch is practically built around Cape Cod’s entire identity. Freddie Prinze Jr. plays a local landscaper who pitches for the Chatham A’s in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. He meets a woman from a wealthy family vacationing in the area. The film tries to show the big differences between year-round locals and excessively wealthy summer visitors. Baseball fields, beaches, parties, and high-end vacation homes all contribute to the fun-filled setting. The movie also fully embraces something distinctive about Cape Cod: its summer baseball culture.

Based on Joan Anderson’s memoir, Year by the Sea follows a woman who escapes to Cape Cod after her children leave home and her husband accepts a long-distance job. Seeking to reinvent herself, she moves into an isolated cottage and begins rebuilding her life based on her own desires. Instead of focusing on the Cape during the height of summer, the movie explores the slower pace of off-season. During this time, beaches and marshes are quiet and cottages sit mostly empty. The environment is essential to her emotional state and her character arc. It shows Cape Cod as a place where people actually live instead of a summertime playground.

The Golden Boys (2008)

Set on Cape Cod around the beginning of the 20th century, The Golden Boys tells of three aging sea captains. The men collectively decide that one of them needs to find a wife to help keep the house clean and well-maintained. The film captures the historic fishing and seafaring communities. Weathered siding, coastal scenery, bobbing boats, and small-town life make this one charming. It’s nice to see an older Cape Cod that existed before tourism became the major industry. It’s a snapshot of a time before luxury vacation homes and five-star resorts.
