The Most Heartwarming Threads in the r/AdorableOldPeople Reddit Community

Heartwarming posts are the bread and butter of the Reddit community, r/AdorableOldPeople. This community focuses on sharing the most heartwarming stories of old people aging gracefully and having a great time in their golden years. The posts range from harmless and cute to truly heartwarming and bittersweet. However, there’s no doubt that these posts will tickle the cockles of your heart, perhaps the sub-cockle area if you’re feeling particularly emotional. Let’s look at the most heartwarming posts from the r/AdorableOldPeople subreddit.

To figure out what belonged on this list, we started by going to the r/AdorableOldPeople subreddit. Then, we sorted the posts on the subreddit by “Top” using the timeframe “of all time.” Once we had a list of all of the top posts from AdorableOldPeople, we simply reproduced the information from those posts here.

Older Man Loves His Fiddler’s Hat

One of the top posts of all time on r/AdorableOldPeople is actually a crosspost from the subreddit r/AmazonReviews. The original post is a screenshot of an Amazon review for a fiddler’s cap. This type of old-timey cap isn’t as popular in modern fashion but remains popular with those who enjoy vintage styles. The review from the screenshot includes an image of the poster, an older man who bought himself a fiddler’s cap from Amazon and was impressed with the fit and style. He states, “Just look at me now — just got my fiddlers cap fits perfect I just love it very comfortable and good looking my new favorite hat of all time anchors away matey.” The man’s smile in the photo is simply radiant. He is so happy to have his fiddler’s cap. It’s adorable.

Old Man Brings His Dog to the Furniture Store to Ensure She Likes His New Chair.

This post from r/AdorableOldPeople features an image of an ad for an article. The article shows an older man who brought his dog to the furniture store when it was time to buy himself a new chair. He wanted to make sure that his best cuddle buddy, his dog, was as enthralled with his chair as he was. After all, if she didn’t like it, she might not cuddle with him as often and that’s simply unacceptable. A dog owner can’t just live without snuggles. Your dog doesn’t pay rent. Make them pay in snuggles!

Old Woman Names Her Drink Bob

Another post from r/AdorableOldPeople features a screenshot of a tweet. The tweet recounts the poster’s experience standing behind an older woman who was visiting Starbucks for, what the poster felt seemed like, the first time. When asked for a name for her drink, the poster says the woman became visibly confused and responded in a quiet voice, “I guess just call it Bob?” not understanding that the barista was asking for her name so they could call her when her drink was done.

Dogs are a person’s best friend. There’s no other place where you can get an endless fountain of love and affection for the price of dog food and some attention. The post shows the original poster’s mother with the OP’s thirteen-year-old dog. The dog is happily licking the woman’s face and the woman has the most cheerful, adorable smile on her face. She looks delighted to be cuddling with this dog and it makes sense that this post gained so much traction in the community.

At thirteen years old, the dog is no spry, young chicken either! In my town, we have a Seniors Adopting Seniors program, where older folks can adopt older animals at a reduced cost, helping move older pets to their forever homes without the decades-long commitment that can be daunting for older people who may worry about dying and leaving their pets behind.

Bob Shares Some Wisdom for the Younger Generations

Courtesy of Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

In an image from the St. Clair Nursing Center, they showed one resident named Bob. According to the board that Bob is holding, he was 91 years old in the photo and it included a small section for “advice for the younger generations.” The wisdom that Mr. Bob shared for the young folks was “Find someone to love and keep on loving them,” which we think is a lovely sentiment. One thing that younger generations have largely lost sight of is that love is a choice you make every day. The whirlwind feelings of love will eventually fade, but if you keep watering the grass, it will stay green even long after the rush has passed.

An Older Expert on Alcohol

This post from r/AdorableOldPeople features a recording of a TV segment regarding a little study done to see if taste testers could tell the difference between brandy and whisky. The reporter says that the team conducting the study “ran into an expert” and convinced her to take the test, but notes that she “didn’t need much convincing.” The older woman in the video tries the two glasses and attempts to determine which one contains brandy and which contains whisky. She’s wrong, according to the proctors, but she doesn’t let that stop her. She continues to drink the alcohol pleasantly, exclaiming, “Cheers, everyone!”

Uncle David and Uncle David

In an adorable post from the subreddit, the OP posted a screenshot of a tweet with a photo of two older men. The caption reads, “Since you all love my Uncle David so much, here he is with his husband, my other Uncle David, who makes an amazing butterscotch raspberry pudding.” The photo shows both Davids, looking joyful and in love and eating the famed butterscotch raspberry pudding together. They’re even wearing the same red plaid shirt, though one David has his shirt open with a black undershirt beneath it. We love the representation of older gay people, who are often forgotten in the modern day.

Grandparents Visit a Young Person Who Lives Abroad

One person says they got an urgent call from their grandparents telling them to check the security cameras on their home. The OP lives abroad and owns a home in their home country that isn’t occupied while they’re abroad. When OP pulled up the security cameras from their home, they were greeted with a delightful scene of their grandparents standing outside their home, waving at the security cameras and holding a red, tinsel heart. Since they couldn’t visit OP in person, they visited in the best way they knew how using the security cameras on their home.

Keeping a Printed Meme by Her Bedside

Another post from the subreddit recounts finding something that they had sent their grandmother in the mail. The OP found a meme on the internet that they thought their grandmother would find funny. However, the 97-year-old woman wasn’t computer savvy enough to send it to her by internet. So, OP printed the meme out on a piece of paper and sent it to their grandmother by mail. Lo and behold, the grandmother enjoyed the meme so much and the fact that her grandchild was thinking of her so strongly that she wanted to send something to her by mail that she kept the printed meme by her bedside.

91-Year-Old Grandma Guesses Pokémon Names

Courtesy of Disney XD

In a video that many users might remember, an older woman, who was 91 at the time of the video’s recording, was tasked with guessing the names of various Pokémon. It’s no small task as the names of Pokémon don’t typically sound like words even if they’re based on real words. The screenshot of the video shows a famous frame from it where the video producers show the woman a picture of Charmander, one of the most famous Pokémon of all time. However, the woman has never seen a single Pokémon and responds, “I’ll call him Hamilton.” Such a dignified name for this little fire lizard!

Grandpa Finally Able to Relax after Providing the Life His Family Needed

One heartwarming post from r/AdorableOldPeople shows an older Asian man sitting on his sofa with a big, gentle smile. The caption reads, “My grandpa uprooted his life in rural Vietnam to build a happy life in America for my family long before I was born, he’s now 90 and able to enjoy the fruits of his labor.” Many immigrant grandchildren grow up with a sense of reverence for their first-generation immigrant grandparents. After all, they sacrificed everything to give their descendants better lives. This grandpa certainly earned his relaxation in his golden years, having elevated his family from rural poverty to the middle class.

Grandma Sends Her Grandaughter Loving Text Messages Every Day

This tweet screenshot shows an image of a collection of texts from the original poster’s grandmother. Each text shows a picture of the grandmother with a loving caption. The first two captions say, “I love you from Einstein’s bagels!” and “I love you from my front room!” while the third one says “Good afternoon princess!!” The OP’s caption says “My grandma sends me these every day. She is the purest thing on the earth and we have to protect her at all costs.” These pictures are the exact kind of pictures my grandparents would have sent me if they had ever gotten on the tech bandwagon in their lifetimes. They loved their grandchildren with all their hearts and would have enjoyed sending us little love messages every day.

Older Woman Enjoys Cosplay

This post from r/AdorableOldPeople shows a post captioned “Cosplay isn’t just for the young…” along with an image of an older woman dressed as the grandmother from Tweety Bird and Sylvester Cat, complete with a bird cage with a Tweety figurine and a stuffed Sylvester to ensure that no one can misidentify her. Cosplay is often associated with younger generations more than older ones. However, we often forget that it was our grandparents at Star Trek conventions who dressed up as their favorite characters so we could dress up as anime characters in the modern day. One famous post in the same vein showed an older woman at an anime convention dressed up as Old Woman Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle. In that post, the poster said that the woman had commented on how hard it is for her to find characters to cosplay due to her age.

Older Professor Pre-Records Classes with Pinocchio Doll

One person recounts their experience with an older professor, 74 years old at the time of the pandemic. Since classes had moved online, the school expected students and teachers to use Zoom to hold and attend classes. However, this professor didn’t feel comfortable using the Zoom platform in his old age; he didn’t understand the way it worked and felt he would make a mistake. So, he pre-recorded the remaining classes for students to watch in their free time. Since he wasn’t comfortable teaching in an empty room, he placed a Pinocchio doll in the front row of the classroom to act as his “student” while teaching.

Grandpa Takes a Photo with OP’s Parrot

The first experience with a new animal can be daunting. Will they like me? Do they bite? These kinds of questions often run through the minds of people who are interacting with new animals. In this post, OP’s grandfather met and held their parrot for the first time. The man insisted that his grandchild take a photo of him holding the parrot so he could print it out and show his friends his interaction with the parrot.

Grandma Willie

This post highlights the OP’s 96-year-old grandmother, Willie. The OP states in the caption that she “survived the Great Depression, being hit by a fire truck and being in a coma, and losing her husband at a young age. Now she drinks liquor, smokes cigars, still lives alone, and hits on younger men.” OP continues to say, “I love her with everything I’ve got,” and for good reason, we love her, too! Enjoy your golden years and live life to the fullest!

Language Barriers

Some immigrant grandparents struggle with speaking the same language as their grandchildren. It can cause distance in a family relationship that should be close. However, this poster sent their grandmother a photo of a lobster wearing clothes. They state that she barely speaks English. However, that didn’t stop her from trying to communicate with her grandchild. She responds to the text with “So cold, cat wears cloth. Que.” It might not be the most coherent English text, but we love people who go out of their comfort zones to talk to the people they love.

Older Couple Recreating Their Wedding Photos

One poster shared an image they found of two older Asian people recreating their wedding photos after 70 years of marriage. The recreated photos are in full-color and higher-resolution, but display their love just as passionately and genuinely as the original. They might have aged but their love has stayed a constant throughout their lives.

A Shirt for Grandpa

Alzheimer’s is a devastating degenerative disease that affects the mental processing and memory parts of the brain. It can make it hard to remember information, even if it’s very important to you. In this post, the poster comments that their grandpa has Alzheimer’s and is struggling to remember his grandchildren’s names. So, they made him a shirt with everyone’s names on it and little stick figure drawings with their primary characteristics so Grandpa could identify his grandchildren. They said it had become his favorite shirt.

CapsLock for Vision

The most popular post of all time on r/AdorableOldPeople features an older woman named Milly. She posted on Facebook in a Houseplants group, which reads, “HI EVERYBODY MY NAME IS MILLY..I USE CAPSLOCK SO I CAN SEE WHAT I WRITE..IM NOT YELLING..MY LEFT EYE IS BAD..SO..JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW.” Unfortunately, she’ll probably end up having this conversation often as posts in Facebook groups usually end up buried after some time. However, we appreciate her tact in letting people know that she’s not yelling. It’s just accessibility!
