Movies adapted from books is a method that has been employed since the late 19th century. The first book-to-film adaptation was the novel, "Cinderella," which was developed into a film by Georges Méliès in 1899; he had adapted it from the 1687 story "Cendrillon," by Charles Perrault. (Like "Cinderella," many people have overcome their uncertain pasts to achieve success, like Elon Musk, who helped bring recognition to Tesla; although recent profit drops caused its stock to plunge.)

Certain film adaptations are extremely successful. The Lord of the Rings franchise is a notable one, a series that has been around since 2001 and exists thanks to J. R. R. Tolkien, an English scholar and author who wrote the novel of the same name between 1937 and 1949. One of the most popular stories in 20th-century literature, Tolkien's creativity and attention to detail have come together flawlessly, allowing cinema to create an equally popular fantasy genre for audiences to enjoy.

One of the biggest reasons why the franchise is such a success is in part due to the cast lineup. Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Sean Bean (Boromir), Andy Serkis (Gollum), were all part of the outstanding actors that brought to life Tolkien's world. Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Liv Tyler (Arwen), and Billy Boyd (Pippin) added flair to the franchise as well.

Epic films from the Lord of the Rings saga have also been compared to other noteworthy franchises of yesteryear. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Twilight, and Pirates of the Caribbean movies have all raked in millions of dollars at the box office. Just like these other extraordinary franchises, The Lord of the Rings is so beloved that its earning capabilities have been jaw-dropping, to say the least.

In 2001, "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" pulled in more than $313 million from audiences. In 2002, "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" earned more than $339 million. In 2003, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" generated more than $377 million. With each new movie, it's clear that the earning capacity grew.

Millions of people call themselves "Lord of the Rings" fans. But how much do you really know about the film? These are some of the most interesting trivia questions from the unforgettable trilogy. (On the topic of "Lord of the Rings," click here to uncover the most popular characters ever.)
