For centuries – or really thousands of years- children didn't have the internet to entertain themselves. Instead, they played games outside and inside, using household objects and their imaginations. Are you up for going back in time and down memory lane? Click through the slideshow to discover things kids used to do for fun before the internet.
Paper Dolls
Paper dolls are not a new concept. They've been around since the 18th century but were especially popular during the 1920s and 30s. They were cheap, easy to make, and fun to play with, as children could get creative with their designs.
Make-Believe/Play-Acting
Make-believe and play-acting are probably the oldest forms of play for children. All you need is your imagination for this to work. Even now, during the age of the internet and technology, kids still play make-believe.
Tag
Tag is another old game that children used to play a lot before the internet. It's still a common children's game. The directions are simple. You run away from the person that is 'it.' If you are tagged, then you must chase people around to choose the next 'it.'
Hopscotch
Hopscotch has been around for likely thousands of years. It's a common game across cultures, although there are slightly different rules.
Jacks
Jacks, also known as knucklebones, is another practically ancient game played across the world. It's easy to play and consists of six-point objects and a rubber ball or marble.
Cowboys and Indians
Cowboys and Indians is another classic game children used to play. It's similar to Cops and Robbers where teams are split into two groups: the Cowboys and the Indians.
Hide-and-Seek
Hide-and-seek is pretty self-explanatory, and it's still a popular game. Someone seeks while everybody else hides.
Baseball
Baseball also has a long history. It was first created in 1845 by Alexander Cartwright. Before the internet, it wasn't uncommon to see children playing together on unofficial teams.
Kickball
Continuing the trend of sports, we have kickball. This was a popular gym game but was also played outside of school. It's still played!
Marbles
There are so many games you can play with marbles. The rules vary by group. Typically though, the goal is to knock out as many marbles from the circle.
Daisy Chains
In the 1960s, and possibly even before, children would spend time outside creating daisy chains. Although daisy is in its name, you can create these beautiful chains with just about any flower.
Red Rover
Do you remember red rover? It's a game that is best played with many people. You hold hands and call people to run at you to disrupt the 'wall.'
Freeze Tag
Freeze tag is almost like a regular tag. However, when you are chosen as the 'tagger,' you need to freeze and stop in place. You can run again after someone who isn't 'it' taps you.
Kick the Can
Anything can be a game. You don't need flashy gadgets or board games. Instead, one can and your foot is enough to play.
Friendship Bracelets
Friendship bracelets came a little after daisy chains but were just as popular. For hours, friends would weave beads and strings to create beautiful designs.
Tamagotchi
While we are focusing on outdoor games, this one is too iconic to ignore. All 90s kids remember Tamagotchis.
Simon Says
Also on our list is Simon says. During this game, one person pretends to be Simon. Everything they say, you must complete, but only if they first say, 'Simon says.'
Dodgeball
Last but not least is dodgeball. It was a super common game during the 80s and 90s and is still played today. During this game, each player throws balls at each other in hopes of knocking out as many players. The last person standing's team wins.
