16 High-Profile Cheating Scandals That Played Out in Public
Smartphones, social media, and viral video have made it remarkably difficult for a public indiscretion to stay private. A moment captured by a concert camera or paparazzi can be clipped, reposted, and dissected around the world within hours. That is exactly what happened in July 2025, when Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company's chief people officer, Kristin Cabot, were shown embracing on the video board at a Coldplay concert.
But the stories below are not all the same. Some involve confirmed affairs or public admissions. Others became cheating scandals because of allegations, photographs, or rumors that took on lives of their own. In several cases, the public narrative went considerably further than what the people involved ever acknowledged.
From a CEO resignation to tabloid scandals that reshaped careers and relationships, these are some of the most heavily publicized infidelity controversies involving celebrities and other high-profile figures. Where the facts remain disputed, it is worth separating what was alleged from what was actually confirmed.
Andy Byron & Kristin Cabot: Coldplay Kiss Cam (2025)
During Coldplay's July 16, 2025 concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the venue camera landed on Astronomer CEO Andy Byron embracing Kristin Cabot, the company's chief people officer. When the pair quickly tried to duck out of view, Coldplay singer Chris Martin joked that they were either having an affair or were very shy. The clip went viral almost immediately and triggered intense online speculation, although neither Byron nor Cabot publicly confirmed an affair.
The consequences were very real even without a public confirmation of what their relationship was. Astronomer placed Byron on leave, opened a formal investigation, and later accepted his resignation as CEO. Cabot subsequently resigned from the company as well.
Media Fallout for Andy Byron & Astronomer
The fallout moved quickly. Astronomer announced that its board had launched a formal investigation and placed Byron on leave. On July 19, 2025, the company said Byron had submitted his resignation and the board had accepted it. Cabot resigned from her position as chief people officer several days later.
The distinction between the viral narrative and the confirmed facts matters. The video showed an intimate-looking embrace, but it did not by itself prove an affair. What is certain is that the episode became a corporate crisis, ended with both executives leaving Astronomer, and introduced a once-obscure data company to a much wider audience for reasons it certainly did not have in the marketing plan.
Other Celebrity Cheating Scandals
The Byron-Cabot clip fits a much older celebrity-news pattern. Long before social media could turn a concert video into international news overnight, affairs and alleged affairs were already tabloid gold. Some of the cases below were openly acknowledged. Others remain allegations, despite years of headlines treating them as settled fact.
Kristen Stewart & Rupert Sanders (2012)
Kristen Stewart was photographed kissing married Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders in July 2012 while she was dating Robert Pattinson. Stewart publicly apologized and called what happened a "momentary indiscretion," while Sanders also apologized to his wife, Liberty Ross. Stewart's relationship with Pattinson later ended, and Ross filed for divorce from Sanders in 2013. Stewart moved well beyond the scandal and married screenwriter Dylan Meyer in April 2025.
Ben Affleck & “Nannygate” (2015)
Reports in the summer of 2015 alleged that Ben Affleck had a relationship with Christine Ouzounian, a nanny who had worked for his family with Jennifer Garner. Affleck's representatives denied that an affair took place. Garner later made one part of the timeline especially clear: she and Affleck had already been separated for months before she ever heard about the nanny, and Ouzounian was not the reason the marriage ended. Affleck and Garner finalized their divorce in 2018 and continued co-parenting their three children.
Adam Levine & Sumner Stroh (2022)
Instagram model Sumner Stroh alleged in 2022 that she had been involved in a year-long affair with Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine. Levine denied having an affair but acknowledged that he had shown poor judgment and "crossed the line" by exchanging flirtatious messages with someone other than his wife, Behati Prinsloo. Stroh also shared a message in which Levine asked whether he could use her name for a future child if his baby was a boy. Levine and Prinsloo remained married in 2026 and have three children together.
Jesse James & Sandra Bullock (2010)
In 2010, shortly after Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Blind Side, multiple women publicly alleged that they had been involved with her husband, motorcycle builder Jesse James. The revelations quickly overwhelmed the marriage. Bullock filed for divorce in April 2010, and it was finalized that June. At the same time, she was privately adjusting to life with her newly adopted son, Louis, whom she went on to raise as a single parent.
Jay-Z & Beyoncé: Lemonade and 4:44 (2016–2017)
Beyoncé's 2016 album Lemonade fueled widespread speculation about infidelity in her marriage to Jay-Z, but the clearest confirmation came from Jay-Z himself. His 2017 album 4:44 addressed the damage he had caused in the marriage, and later that year he spoke directly about infidelity during an interview with The New York Times. Rather than separate, the couple worked through the crisis and remained together.
Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie & Jennifer Aniston (2005)
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie met while making Mr. & Mrs. Smith while Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. Jolie later said that she and Pitt fell in love while working on the film, but she denied that they became physically intimate before Pitt and Aniston separated. Pitt and Aniston announced their separation in January 2005 and divorced later that year. Pitt and Jolie went on to marry in 2014, separated in 2016, and reached a divorce settlement in 2024 after years of legal disputes.
Lily James & Dominic West (2020)
British actress Lily James and married actor Dominic West set off a tabloid frenzy in October 2020 after they were photographed looking unusually close during a trip to Rome. Images showed the two sharing a scooter and West kissing James on the cheek and touching her head during lunch. The photographs prompted immediate speculation about an affair, but neither actor publicly confirmed one. The next day, West and his wife, Catherine FitzGerald, appeared together outside their home and released a handwritten statement saying their marriage was strong and that they were still together.
Woody Allen & Soon-Yi Previn (1992)
Woody Allen's relationship with Soon-Yi Previn became public in 1992 while he was still involved with Mia Farrow, Soon-Yi's adoptive mother. Soon-Yi was 21 and Allen was 56. Contrary to a common retelling of the scandal, Allen was not Soon-Yi's adoptive father, stepfather, or legal guardian. Farrow and Allen never married, and Allen never adopted Soon-Yi. The family connection nevertheless made the relationship enormously controversial. Allen and Previn married in 1997 and later adopted two daughters together.
Tiger Woods Infidelity Scandal (2009)
A November 2009 car crash outside Tiger Woods' Florida home triggered intense scrutiny of the golfer's private life. As multiple women came forward alleging relationships with him, Woods eventually acknowledged his infidelity and announced an indefinite break from professional golf. Several sponsors distanced themselves from him, including AT&T, which ended its sponsorship deal. Woods returned to competition at the 2010 Masters and years later completed one of golf's most memorable comebacks by winning the Masters again in 2019.
Anthony Weiner Sexting Scandal (2011–2016)
Then-Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York resigned from Congress in June 2011 after admitting that he had sent sexually explicit photos and messages to multiple women online and had initially lied about his account being hacked. Years later, a federal investigation focused on sexually explicit communications with a 15-year-old girl. In 2017, Weiner pleaded guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor and was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. The case transformed what had begun as a political sexting scandal into a federal criminal conviction.
LeAnn Rimes & Eddie Cibrian (2009)
LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian met while making the Lifetime movie Northern Lights. In 2009, while both were married to other people, footage surfaced showing the pair kissing at a restaurant, setting off an enormous tabloid story. Rimes later acknowledged that she had handled the beginning of the relationship badly and took responsibility for her part in it. Both eventually divorced their spouses, and Rimes and Cibrian married in April 2011. They celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in 2026.
Tristan Thompson & Khloé Kardashian (2018–2022)
Just two days before Khloé Kardashian gave birth to their daughter True in April 2018, footage surfaced appearing to show Tristan Thompson kissing another woman at a New York nightclub. Additional older footage showing Thompson with other women soon circulated as well. Another scandal followed in 2019, when Jordyn Woods said Thompson kissed her on the lips as she was leaving a party. Woods denied having sex with him or engaging in the more extensive encounter described in some early reports.
The relationship later unraveled again after Thompson fathered a son with Maralee Nichols. The child was conceived in 2021 during a period when Thompson and Kardashian were reportedly together. After a paternity test confirmed that he was the father, Thompson publicly took responsibility in January 2022 and apologized to Kardashian for the hurt and humiliation he had caused her.
Ethan Hawke & Ryan Shawhughes (2000s)
Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman separated in 2003 amid widespread rumors about infidelity. Ryan Shawhughes had previously worked briefly as a nanny for the couple's children, and after Hawke later married her, the tabloids often portrayed Shawhughes as the cause of the divorce. Hawke has repeatedly denied that version of events. He said Shawhughes had stopped working for the family and returned to college, and that the two did not become romantically involved until well after his marriage had broken down. Hawke and Thurman's divorce was finalized in 2005, and Hawke married Shawhughes in 2008.
Ashton Kutcher & Sara Leal (2011)
In October 2011, Sara Leal told Us Weekly that she and Ashton Kutcher had sex after an all-night party at San Diego's Hard Rock Hotel. According to Leal, the encounter happened in the early hours of September 24, the sixth wedding anniversary of Kutcher and Demi Moore. Leal said Kutcher had told her that he and Moore were separated. Kutcher did not publicly confirm Leal's account at the time. Moore announced in November 2011 that she was ending the marriage, saying that as a wife there were certain values and vows she held sacred.
Jude Law & the Nanny (2005)
Jude Law publicly apologized in July 2005 after the Sunday Mirror published an account from Daisy Wright, a nanny who cared for his children with ex-wife Sadie Frost. Law said he was deeply ashamed and apologized to his then-fiancée, Sienna Miller, and their families for the pain he had caused. Unlike several other entries on this list, the basic question of whether the infidelity occurred was not left to tabloid speculation. Law acknowledged his actions himself. He and Miller later reconciled for a time before ultimately ending their relationship.
