Notorious for their inhumane acts, genocidal dictators like Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, and Mao Zedong rank among the most reviled figures in history, their devastating decisions impacting millions. But beyond authoritarian rulers, other leaders - politicians, military officers, and the like - have also earned widespread condemnation and scorn for the repercussions of their actions.

The recent passing of former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, for instance, prompted renewed accusations of war crimes for his role in the bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War, as well as his backing of various South American coups and repressive regimes worldwide. While some controversial public figures maintain admirers amidst their detractors, the reprehensible legacies they leave behind cannot be denied.

To determine the most detested Americans throughout history, 24/7 Tempo referred to a range of sources - contemporary news reports, historical accounts, and encyclopedic entries like Britannica - focusing on the long-term impacts and perceptions of their misdeeds.

In addition to presidents and polarizing political figures, the list also features famous spies and traitors, assassins, fraudsters, and cult leaders. Some historical figures who were widely despised at various points during their lifetime but have come to be revered as national heroes, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, and Muhammad Ali, were excluded. (Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Lincoln are two of the people honored most by statues in America.)
