Law & Order: The Most Notorious Crime in Every State

Every state is known for its landmarks, culture, and history. But each is also marked by crimes that shocked communities and, in some cases, the nation. From serial murders and acts of domestic terrorism to massive financial fraud, these cases left lasting scars and shaped public memory.

To identify the most notorious crime in every state, 24/7 Tempo reviewed FBI records and extensive media coverage. Because notoriety is inherently subjective, selections were based on the scale of impact, historical significance, and lasting public awareness. While many of the crimes involve multiple murders, others stand out for their broader social or economic consequences.

Some cases resulted in convictions and lengthy prison sentences, while others remain unsolved mysteries. Not all notorious crimes involve violence. Major financial scandals, including corporate collapses and Ponzi schemes, devastated thousands of victims and reshaped regulatory policy.

In several instances, tragedy also spurred social change. Certain crimes intensified calls for civil rights protections, hate crime legislation, and reforms in law enforcement. Others became embedded in American culture, inspiring bestselling books and films that continue to shape how the events are remembered.
