Movie Characters of the ’80s Who Were Most Likable

Movie Characters of the ’80s Who Were Most Likable

Many decades can lay claim to being the best but there was something about the 1980s, a time known as the “decade of decadence” that brought us many classic films. From coming-of-age tales, which gave us the Brat Pack to sci-fi and comedy, which introduced the parody film and gifted a movie still considered one of the top parody films of all time (Airplane!), it had something for everyone.

It was a decade that gave us consumerism and materialism, one that introduced the music video and saw a wave of blockbuster films. The 1980s were a fun and vibrant time, especially in the film industry. Some of the best films in cinema history were released in this decade. We got classics like “Back to the Future”, “E.T.”, “Terminator”, “Ghostbusters”, “The Goonies”, “The Shining”, “Pretty in Pink”, “Aliens”, “Pet Sematary”, and more.

The action genre was popularized during this decade, adding to the list of films produced in the 1980s that were loud, flashy, and easy to enjoy. Many of the films were also studio-driven pictures as opposed to filmmaker-driven. The characters were comedic, had a lot of heart, and were refreshing to see. Not only were they full of personality, but the makeup and costumes are hard to forget, particularly in movies like “Beetlejuice” and “Ghostbusters.”

There were many memorable characters – who can forget Biff or Marty McFly – but who are the best characters? Which movie characters from the 1980s stand out amongst the thousands? Likable characters are opinion-based and can be villains or someone with questionable morals, and it should be noted that not all likable characters listed here are protagonists. Follow along to discover some of the most likable movie characters of the 80s (Click here for the best ’80s movies that will never get old.)

24/7 Tempo consulted different entertainment websites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Screen Rant to comprise this list. We also reviewed multiple Reddit posts on the best 1980s movies and characters and noted the names frequently repeated and upvoted. Listed here are movie characters in live-action and animated films spread out among a diverse genre of films, including horror, romance, comedy, action, adventure, and family. Movie characters were limited to one per movie, with one exception listed.

Here is the list of the most likable movie characters of the 1980s:

One of several unforgettable characters from the 1980s is E.T. This strange alien from a far-off planet is a defining symbol of the 80s. During the film, E.T. is lost and befriends a group of kids who try to help him get home. “E.T.” also known as “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial,” was released in the United States on June 11, 1982. It easily exceeded its budget and became popular enough to get video games and even a theme park ride called E.T. Adventure.

It stars incredible actors like Jeffrey Jones, Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Catherine O’Hara, and Geena Davis.

She’s a red-haired mermaid, who is curious and naive, and ultimately falls in love with a human named Prince Eric whom she saves.

Ariel is relatable, sweet, and quirky. Although voiceless in the film, “The Little Mermaid”, her body language makes her seem endearing. This romantic musical fantasy film was so successful it received a sequel, TV series, and stage musical.
