January is one of the coldest months in the United States. All along the Northeast from Maine to Washington state and almost everything in between, winter temperatures average from 14°F to 28°F, and in central states like Colorado and Ohio, temperatures can average 25°F to 41°F. It may not seem like an optimal time to tour many places but since winter is the off-season, these beautiful national parks to visit in January may be ideal.

Most national parks are busiest during the summer season but if you're looking for a less crowded experience, these are perfect. From the wintery landscapes of California's Lassen Volcanic and Montana's Yellowstone to the dreamy cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park, there is truly something for everyone.
