The Most Polarizing Artists in Country Music

The Most Polarizing Artists in Country Music

Key Points:

  • Plenty of country music stars have earned a negative reputation due to a range of factors.
  • Many of these artists are successful, despite their mistakes that led to criticism.
  • In some cases, their music forced us to rethink what defines country music.

Country music has given us some of the most beloved and influential artists in American music history, but not every performer is universally praised. Like in any genre, country music has its share of divisive individuals. These artists spark debate among fans, critics, and even fellow musicians. They’ve earned polarizing reputations in a variety of ways, whether due to controversial comments, odd career moves, musical style changes, or personal behavior.

Still, even artists who are heavily criticized can play an important role in shaping the genre. Their music may alter traditions or force us to rethink what defines country music. In this list, we take a look at several country music artists who have faced controversy over the years and explore why they’ve become the most debated figures in country music.

To gather this list, Tempo consulted several entertainment sources. These include LA Weekly, Cody Wolfe Music, Pulse Music Board, and Rolling Stone.

Maren Morris

  • Hometown: Arlington, Texas

Maren Morris is controversial politically, especially due to disputes with conservative country personalities. She publicly feuded with Brittany Aldean and commentator Candace Owens. In addition, would-be fans feel like her music is too overly produced, saying they don’t believe her songs necessarily fit into the category of “real” country music. She has also criticized Nashville’s country industry culture, which some traditional fans disliked. Morris’s noteworthy songs include “Chasing After You” (with Ryan Hurd) and “The Bones.”

Kenny Chesney

  • Hometown: Knoxville, Tennessee

Kenny Chesney is a well-known country music singer with a long list of songs to jam out to. By now, most fans who are interested in country music have heard “When the Sun Goes Down” and “Somewhere with You.”

Some critics argue his “beach country” style strays too far from traditional country. Early in his career he was criticized for radio-ready, party songs like “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy.” In his personal life, his very brief marriage to actress Renée Zellweger back in 2005 drew tabloid attention and speculation.

Rascal Flatts

Rascal Flatts have been negatively judged by fans.
  • Hometown: Columbus, Ohio

Rascal Flatts is a country rock band that originated in Columbus, Ohio. Back in 1999, they came together with one massive goal in mind – to release epic country music. Their first self-named album dropped in 2000. At the time, they garnered tons of positive attention.

Though successful, this band has been frequently criticized for their pop-country sound with heavy production. Some traditionalists say their music is too polished and not authentically country. On occasion, critics have also mocked Gary LeVox’s vocal style. Despite this, they had 17 No. 1 hits.

Luke Bryan

  • Hometown: Leesburg, Georgia

Lue Bryan is seen as a leading figure of outdated “bro country”, which infamously focuses on partying, trucks, and women. Traditional country fans say his music lacks the depth appreciated in earlier country eras. Additionally, his genre crossovers have irritated fans at time, like when Bryan went out of his way to tap into the realm of rap music. On top of this, his meant-to-be-humorous stage antics sometimes rub purists the wrong way.

Natalie Maines

Natalie Maines made a bad political comment.
  • Hometown: Lubbock, Texas

The Chicks, once known as The Dixie Chicks, consists of three women with musical talent. Natalie Manes is one of those women, and she joined the band in 1995. In 2003, she said: “We’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas.” This caused massive backlash, boycotts, and radio bans.

Her controversial words have haunted her ever since. Country music is often enjoyed by conservative people who tend to vote for Republican leaders. Even though Bush is no longer president, members of the Republican Party have never been able to forgive her.

Jason Aldean

Jason Aldean is known for being somewhat of a hothead.
  • Hometown: Macon, Georgia

Jason Aldean has been releasing music since the early 2000s. His debut single “Hicktown” hit radios in 2005, putting him on the map in the country music world. Unfortunately, he faced a jaw-dropping cheating scandal when he was photographed kissing Brittany Kerr in 2012 while married. He also dealt with allegations of racism in 2023 after releasing a song called “Try It in a Small Town.” Critics argued the lyrics suggested vigilante violence, and the video was filmed at a courthouse tied to racial violence history.
