From Vintage Finds to Quirky Gems: Austin’s Top Thrift Shops
Thrift shopping is a lot like a treasure hunt; you never know what hidden gems are tucked away among the racks and shelves. Whether you're searching for a unique vintage piece to elevate your home décor or just want to spend the day browsing for fun, Austin is full of can't-miss thrift shops.
From well-known names like Goodwill to quirky, locally owned spots, the city's stores offer an eclectic mix of finds. No matter what you're after, chances are you'll discover it in one of Austin's many thrift shops.
This post was updated on September 26, 2025 to clarify the number of Goodwill locations in Austin, Treasure City Thrift's current hours, Room Service Vintage's size, franchise-specific donations, Buffalo Exchange inventory, and Austin Pets Alive! location details.
Goodwill Stores – Various Locations
There are dozens of Goodwill stores in Austin, and they provide the experience you'd expect. They are well organized, and when you walk in, you know exactly where to find the items that interest you. You'll find a massive area of clothing for men, women, and children of all ages, alongside a media section with books, DVDs, video games, and even VHS tapes.
Kiddos will have several rows of toys to choose from. Adults have many rows of electronics to peruse, and they also sell furniture in case you're looking to furnish a new Austin home for cheap.
It's worth noting that Goodwill items aren't always quality-checked, as they are sorted and priced quickly; some items may be broken or incomplete.
Treasure City Thrift – 2142 E 7th St, Austin, TX 78702
Treasure City is one of the first major hidden gems you'll find in the city. As the self-proclaimed "most affordable thrift store in Austin", they are organized for solidarity and not charity. Profits go toward making goods affordable to all groups of people, providing community space to marginalized communities, and educating the public on zero waste. As of 2025, they're open Tuesday–Sunday.
The store also supports many groups in the area, including the Inside Books Program and the Yellow Bike Project. You'll find an eclectic selection at Treasure City Thrift, from clothing and dishes to toys, artwork, and quirky one-of-a-kind pieces. And you can donate nearly anything, too. The only exceptions are the usual no-gos like mattresses, bedding, or broken items. Whether you're an Austin local or just passing through, this community-minded shop is well worth a visit.
Room Service Vintage – 117 N Loop Blvd E, Austin, TX 78751
This is a very special thrift store in Austin, specializing in vintage items from the 1950s-1980s. This sprawling 4,500-square-foot shop is packed with treasures — from clothing, dishes, and housewares to electronics, furniture, and even rare vintage signs from decades past. It's a must-visit spot if you're in the neighborhood.
Texas Thrift Store – 5319 N Interstate Hwy 35, Austin, TX 78723
The next of the best thrift stores in Austin is Texas Thrift. While this company has stores in other cities, the Austin location is something special. There is a huge assortment of clothes, dishes, housewares, toys, and media, including books and DVDs. Texas Thrift also employs thousands of people throughout Texas and New Mexico.
Uptown Cheapskate – 3005 S Lamar Blvd 110.-A, Austin, TX 78704
There are several Uptown Cheapskate locations, and the one in Austin is worth the visit. Uptown Cheapskate curates a wide selection of modern, in-style clothing for men, women, and kids, with a strong focus on name-brand labels. The concept is simple: it's a more upscale resale shop where you'll find pieces that look like they came straight from top retailers, but at a fraction of the price. Sellers also benefit — bring in your gently used items, and you can expect a fair payout in return.
This is also a store that supports great causes. Any clothes they can't buy are often donated to the Purple Heart Foundation and Build On, a group that helps to build schools in underdeveloped countries. (Donations to the Purple Heart Foundation are not universal; participation varies by franchise.)
Hope Family Thrift Store – 13801 Burnet Rd 200., Austin, TX 78727
This is one of the best thrift stores in Austin. It's another company that has numerous locations, but this one is huge, clean, and well-organized, featuring a variety of items across multiple categories.
In addition to the usual selection of electronics, toys, clothes, and housewares, shoppers will find a massive selection of furniture. Everything from couches to chairs and bookcases. Much of the furniture looks nearly new, making it easy to outfit an entire home in one stop. What sets this shop apart is its impressive selection of dishes, crystalware, and other delicate but beautiful china. You'll even find gift cards here — a nice gift choice for anyone who loves the thrill of thrifting.
Buffalo Exchange – 2904 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX 78705
This is another chain thrift store with a great location in Austin. It's a smaller store, but it's packed with clothing. They focus on clothing and there are great options for men, women, and children. There is just about every category of clothing you can imagine, including:
- Plus sizes
- Menswear
- Shoes
- Vintage
- Jewelry
- Handbags
- Activewear
- Outerwear
It's just as fun to sell them items as it is to pick them out. When you're selling, be open-minded because they love unique styles. This store also sells gift cards for friends who love to thrift.
Austin Pets Alive! Thrift – 5801 Burnet Road Austin, TX 78756
This is an incredible thrift store in Austin with a very unique twist. Choose between many different clothing and jewelry options, including a fair share of accessories, toys, various electronics, and media, including books and DVDs. This Austin shop is one of their major locations; you'll find the best products at great prices.
What makes Austin Pets Alive! Thrift extra special is that every purchase supports rescue efforts, helping cats and dogs find safe, loving homes. By shopping here, you're not just scoring great deals — you're giving animals a second chance. There are two other Austin locations: 1409 West Oltorf and 2025 Guadalupe St.
The Next to New Shop – 5435 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX 78756
This versatile thrift shop truly has a bit of everything — from dishes and homewares to clothing for men, women, and kids. You'll also find vintage art, appliances, and even musical instruments. It's the ideal place to uncover unique treasures!
Top Drawer Thrift – 5312-A Airport Blvd
In recent years, Top Drawer moved from its long-time Burnet Road location to a new spot at 5312-A Airport Blvd (corner of North Loop / 53rd & Airport Blvd) in the North Loop neighborhood. This is a great store that sells clothes, housewares, toys, and more. They are a 100% donation-driven thrift store. Much of the sales and money that comes in goes to hospice and recuperative care programs for people living with HIV.
