States With the Largest Birth Rate Drops

In the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, many media outlets and researchers anticipated that the stay-at-home orders and work-stoppage mandates would prompt couples to spend more intimate time together. This led to predictions of a significant increase in birth rates for 2021.

However, the anticipated boom turned out to be so small that it barely registered as a year-over-year increase (though it was the first such rise since 2014). The National Center for Health Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a total of 3,664,292 live births in the United States in 2021, representing a statistically insignificant less than 1% increase from the previous year. Subsequent data from 2022 suggests that the country’s fertility rate has reverted to its long-standing downward trend.

But that boom turned out to be so small that it barely measured as a year-over-year increase (though it was the first such rise since 2014). Data from 2022 indicates that the country’s fertility rate is back on its decades-long downward trend.

To identify the states where births declined last year, 24/7 Tempo analyzed the number of births in each state in 2021 and 2022 using preliminary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Population statistics for each state came from the U.S. Census Bureau. Provisional counts may differ by approximately 2% from final counts, due to rounding and reporting variation. Additionally, the accuracy of the provisional counts may change over time.

In the top 10 most-populous states, which are home to more than half of the country’s population, only Texas, Florida, and Georgia reported year-over-year increases in live births last year. Five of these heavily populated states saw declines exceed the national average. For instance, women in Illinois gave birth to nearly 53,000 fewer babies in 2022 than in 2021, reflecting a 3.1% drop. (Only these 13 states had more births in 2022 than in 2021.)

Here are the states that had the biggest drops in births:
