Life expectancy in the United States rose in 2022 for the first time since before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, life expectancy at birth was 77.5 years, up by 1.1 years from 76.4 the previous year.
The increase did not offset a loss of 2.4 years in life expectancy between 2019 and 2021, which has been attributed to excess deaths from the epidemic. Total number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 is 1,156,484, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC researchers said the drop in deaths from the virus accounted for about 84% of the rise in U.S. life expectancy. The increase in life expectancy can also be attributed to declines in deaths caused by heart disease and homicide, say researchers.
Life expectancy varies greatly from state to state and is based on many factors.
To determine the states with the longest and shortest life expectancy, 24/7 Tempo reviewed 2018-2020 life expectancy at birth figures obtained from the 2023 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps report. Data on income, poverty rate, and the share of residents without health insurance came from the U.S. Census Bureau. Information on premature death also came from the 2023 CHR. All data are for the most recent period available.
Even though the U.S. life expectancy increased in 2022, it remains lower than most developed nations. In 1980, life expectancy at birth in the U.S. and in similar large and wealthy countries was nearly identical, but the gap has widened over recent decades. U.S. life expectancy peaked at 78.9 in 2014 and largely remained flat until the pandemic.
Data on deaths before age 75, poverty rate, adults without health insurance and median household income correlate to a state’s life expectancy. States with longer life expectancies are largely found on either coast and western states such as Utah and Colorado. They tend to have fewer deaths before age 75, fewer adults without health insurance, lower poverty rates, and higher incomes. (This is a list of the unhealthiest city in every state.)
Most of the states with lower life expectancy are found in the South. Nine of 10 states with the highest number of deaths before age 75 are in the South; eight of 10 have the highest poverty rates; six of 10 southern states have the highest percentage of uninsured adults; eight of 10 of states with the lowest incomes are southern states.
