The Most Iconic Diner in Each State

A diner is a friendly, family-owned restaurant that serves home-cooked, affordable food. Diners first emerged in the 1870s as horse-drawn food carts on the East Coast. By the 1910s, some of these evolved into permanent restaurants, often by repurposing train cars, giving many early diners an oblong shape. Later, prefabricated structures with stainless steel and colorful booths allowed diners to be transported around the country. So some diners operated in one location before being trucked over long distances to new homes.

The 1930s and ’40s were a golden age for diners — many of them grew up along the fabled transcontinental Route 66 — and by the 1950s, there were roughly 6,000 of them around the country, with the majority being on the East Coast. Depending on what you consider to be a diner, there are probably now about 2,000 still in existence. At last count, some 600 of those were in New Jersey, the nation’s undisputed diner capital. To determine the most iconic diner in every state — the one that best typifies the diner genre — 24/7 Tempo reviewed diner listings from numerous food and regional tourism sites. Diner chains, though they are sometimes very good, were eliminated in favor of more traditional places.

Diners on our list range in their menu offerings, from limited to extensive. Most focus on breakfast and lunch, with breakfast typically served into the afternoon. Some diners also offer dinner service. While alcohol is not central to a traditional diner, some establishments have attached bars or serve beer and wine.

Here is the most iconic diner in every state.
