Clothes and Accessories That Went Out of Style in 2023

A new year is a time to make new changes in all areas of your life. Whether you want to shake things up with your career path or your social circle, this is a fabulous time to start creating some shifts. One of the easiest changes to make depends on the clothing you keep in your closet.

Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and confident in the clothing they wear, and that includes accessories. If you’re stuck wearing totally outdated items, it will be obvious to everyone that you’re simply not keeping up. Click here to find out about all the trends that need to go out of style in 2024.

To gather this list of clothes and accessories that went out of style in 2023, 24/7 Tempo consulted several fashion-forward websites including InStyle, Style Caster, and Fashion Trend LA.

Clear purses officially went out of style in 2023. These purses leave little to the imagination when it comes to your privacy, so it’s probably a good thing they’re no longer trendy. Of course, you might be required to wear a clear purse if you’re going to certain concert venues or festivals that enforce those rules. If not, you can leave clear purses at home in 2024 and forget about them for a while.

Neon colors used to be super fun to wear since they always help you stand out in a crowd. Unfortunately, neon colors totally went out of style in 2023. Now, it looks better to wear calmer colors that are more neutral and relaxed. This doesn’t mean you can only wear basic colors like black or white. Neutral tones and pastel colors are perfectly acceptable based on what you find most aesthetically pleasing.

The success of the “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie was a big deal in 2023. Going into the new year, though, it’s time to give your Barbie pink shades of clothing a break. Everyone was wearing loads of pink during the months leading up to the release of the movie and the months following. Now that the heat of “Barbie” is starting to die down, wearing pink all the time is dying down as well.

It’s time to give your faux fur slides a break in the new year. This is wonderful news for people who care about their hygiene! Faux fur slides can collect an unsightly amount of dirt and dust without you even noticing. After all, the faux fur of your slides is always so close to the ground when you’re running your errands. The faux fur sewn onto slides usually end up getting tangled and matted pretty quickly anyway.

Long cardigans

Long cardigans are no longer a fashionable staple to keep in your closet as we head into 2024. If you’re ever feeling especially chilly, it makes more sense to wear a long trench coat instead. Trench coats are in style in 2024, but long cardigans have lost their luster. The material of cardigans is usually too thin to keep you warm as a full coat or trench coat.

Crossbody bags

Crossbody bags used to be super popular, but it’s time to switch back to wearing regular purses that hang over one shoulder or arm in 2024. Crossbody bags are similar to fanny packs, but instead of tying around your waist, they tie around your shoulders and chest. The concept of crossbody bags was interesting for a moment, but that moment is over for now.

Another outdated trend? Fringe.

Fringe detailing is another trend that went out of style in 2023. That being said, any dresses or tops you have with fringe detailing probably shouldn’t come along with you into 2024. This style paid homage to the flopper fashion of the 1920s. It’s possible fringe detailing will rise in popularity again at some point in the future, but that isn’t the case right now.

Deep V-necks

Deep V-necks can be an inconvenience.

Deep V-necks aren’t getting as much love as they once did now that we’re headed into 2024. One of the reasons why? It can be incredibly tricky to find undergarments that work well with deep V-necks without too much exposure. Since it can be inconveniencing and annoying to find the right bra or bralette for a shirt or dress with a deep V-neck, it isn’t the worst news to see this trying to go out of style.

Skin-tone tights

There’s nothing fun or interesting to look at when a person is wearing skin-tone tights. For this reason, this trend went out of style in 2023. Heading into 2024, it makes more sense to purchase tights that come in different colors or showcase different patterns. Tights with colorful swirls, stripes, or polkadots are far more enticing than boring skin-tone tights.

Platform sneakers went out of style in 2023, which means it’s a great time to invest in regular sneakers that don’t have thick soles. This is great news for people who enjoy wearing their sneakers to the gym or out on walks. It’s not comfortable to exercise in platform sneakers. When your sneakers of choice have normal sized soles, they can be worn during social outings and for fitness purposes.

Micro purses are no longer trendy heading into 2024. They went out of style in 2023, and it’s probably due to how inconveniently sized they are. Micro purses might look cute while you’re holding onto them, but they don’t have enough space to truly carry your essentials. In theory, a useful purse should be spacious enough to hold your phone, your keys, a few pieces of makeup, feminine hygiene products, and more.

Oversized T-shirts are no longer considered trendy as we head into 2024. This trend went out of style in 2023, and one of the reasons is that they never add any value to your physique. Oversized T-shirts are usually way too baggy and loose. While it will always be fine to wear oversized T-shirts while you’re lounging at home, hitting the gym, or exercising, there’s no reason to wear them anywhere else.

Ankle boots went out of style in 2023 since they don’t offer much help in elongating a person’s legs. When boots stop at the ankle, it often makes a person’s legs look shorter and stockier than they naturally are. Boots that run higher and stop around mid-calf help your legs look longer and more elegant.

Bomber jackets

Bomber jackets went out of style in 2023, despite the fact that they were super popular for several years in a row. They do a great job keeping you warm on days with chilly weather, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other jacket styles that can get the same job done in 2024. Bomber jackets used to be considered trendy, but now they’re thought of as tacky. Adults wearing bomber jackets give high school vibes.

Skinny scarves

Skinny scarves aren’t exactly useful.

Skinny scarves are another trend that went out of style in 2023. What’s the point of wearing a scarf if it’s not doing its intended job in the first place? A scarf is meant to tie around your neck to keep you warm and toasty on a cold day. When your scarf is way too skinny, it doesn’t offer enough fabric to make a difference. If you’re going to be wearing scarves in 2024, they should be large enough to keep your body temperature up.

Plain hoop earrings shouldn’t be on your radar going into 2024. They went out of style in 2023 because they’re considered basic and boring. There are plenty of other earring styles to experiment with if you enjoy wearing this type of jewelry. Hoop earrings are still totally acceptable, but they should have extra gems or crystals added to them. Hoop earrings in shapes like hearts, diamonds, and stars are also fun to wear. Find out more about these 12 fashion trends we hope to see back next year.
