When Celebrity Obsession Turned Dangerous

When Celebrity Obsession Turned Dangerous

Fame often brings both positives and negatives. While stars enjoy admiration, wealth, and opportunity, they can also attract unwanted attention. Throughout recent decades, some celebrities have become the targets of obsessive individuals who crossed the line in major ways. At times, dangerous fixations led these stalkers to spend years pursuing their victims. They sent unwanted letters, appeared uninvited on their property, and even made alarming threats. In these cases, obsessions became so intense that police intervention was necessary. Some incidents ended harmlessly, while others resulted in tragedy. Here are eight stalkers who became infamous for targeting celebrities.

John Hinckley Jr. ultimately became best known for his assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. However, long before his criminal actions, Hinckley had developed an unhealthy obsession with actress Jodie Foster. He became infatuated with the actress after repeatedly watching the film Taxi Driver. In attempts to contact her, Hinckley wrote letters to Foster and even enrolled at Yale University, where she was attending classes. For some reason, he thought the best way to attract her attention was by killing the president. He thought the murder would impress her, but of course the bizarre plan failed.

Not surprisingly, megastar Taylor Swift has dealt with multiple stalkers over the years. However, Roger Alvarado became one of Swift’s most notorious stalkers after repeatedly showing up at her New York residence. In 2018, he was arrested after breaking into her home. Luckily, Swift wasn’t there at the time, but he allegedly used her shower and slept in her bed. Incredibly, even after serving jail time, Alvarado returned to the property and was arrested a second time. His pattern depicted textbook obsessive behavior that continued despite legal consequences. The bizarre break-in and multiple attempts to get to Swift highlight the scary lengths some stalkers will go to contact their victim.

Margaret Ray (David Letterman)

In one of the oddest celebrity stalker stories to date, Margaret Ray became obsessed with late-night TV host David Letterman in the ’80s and ’90s. Over a decade, she broke into his house several times and even stole one of his cars. Ray told others that she was married to Letterman despite never having met him. At one point, she even claimed Letterman was the father of her child. Like with other cases of true obsession, numerous arrests did not stop the behavior. The intense saga lasted for years.

Ricardo Lopez (Björk)

Ricardo López developed an unbreakable fixation on Icelandic singer Björk. When he learned she had a boyfriend, López went into a jealous rage, expressing anger and resentment. He documented his dangerous thoughts and spiraling emotions in long video diaries. The taped confessions revealed a deteriorating mental state and a perception that Björk had betrayed him. López eventually mailed a bomb to Björk’s London address before taking his own life on camera. Authorities intercepted the package before it reached Björk. Their actions prevented what could have become an even greater tragedy. The case remains one of the most disturbing, high-profile stalking cases ever documented.

Actress Catherine Zeta-Jones was targeted by Dawnette Knight, a woman who became obsessed with Zeta-Jones’ husband, Michael Douglas. Knight sent threatening messages to Zeta-Jones and was obviously hostile toward the couple. The threats escalated, growing serious enough to involve law enforcement. Knight was eventually arrested and received a prison sentence for her letters. The case was especially unusual because instead of stalking the man she was obsessed with, Knight instead turned her focus on Zeta-Jones.
