This Is the Top Pie Shop in Each State

The origin of pie can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Greece and is found in countless other cultures. Even the most celebrated of American desserts, the apple pie, has roots in another country. However, pie is arguably considered the most American. Nobody says “As American as a chocolate chip cookie” or “As easy as angel food cake.” Similarly, we don’t illustrate our points with cake charts.

According to the American Pie Council, the average American eats at least six slices of pie a year, with four of them eaten during the holiday season. Pies are a staple on diner menus and are sold everywhere from supermarkets to farm stands, and of course, at independent bakeries and pie shops. (These are the best pie shops in America.)

There are also many pies being baked at home, and bakers now have the choice of using pre-baked crusts. But sometimes, when you want to indulge in this American staple and prefer to get one already baked, you often want to find the top pie shop in each state.

24/7 Tempo consulted reviews and rankings on a wide range of websites to determine the top pie shops in each state, including Yelp, Taste of Home, Thrillist, and Food Network, as well as numerous local and regional sites. Precedence was given to shops specializing in pies (often with “pie” in their name), but in some cases bakeries with a more general focus we included (sometimes with cafés attached), especially if they were highly rated for their pies. 

Some of the pie purveyors on this list not only make savory pies, but sweet pies as well. For the top pies in each state, we have showcased the latter. (For pies and more, consider this list of America’s best bakeries and their specialties.)

Most of the pie specialties mentioned here are traditional, filled with fruits, berries, nuts, custards, and/or chocolate, and sometimes a dash of booze – like the “drunken turtle pie” at the Pie Junkie in Oklahoma City, a riff on turtle candies made with chocolate, salted bourbon caramel, and pecans. Although there are some pie-makers that venture outside of the box – or crust. The Purple Pie Place in Custer, South Dakota, offers a raspberry rhubarb jalapeño, while Miss American Pie in Brooklyn crisscrosses the top of its apple pie with a lattice of bacon.
