The Movies That Have Won the Most Oscars

When the first Academy Awards ceremony was held, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles in 1929, there were 13 award categories. Today there are 23, with a 24th (for best casting) to be added for the 2026 ceremony.

They say it’s an honor just to be nominated, and some movies, over the years, have racked up an impressive number of appearances on the Oscar shortlist. Two relatively recent movies — “Titanic” (1997) and “La La Land” (2016) — garnered a record-setting 14 nominations apiece. So did a classic from 1950, the Betty Davis tour-de-force “All About Eve.” Another nine films, ranging from “Gone with the Wind” (1939) to “Oppenheimer” (2023), were nominated 13 times.

However satisfying it must be for those on both sides of the camera to find themselves considered for Hollywood’s highest accolade, of course, it’s much better to actually win one — or more — of those coveted golden statuettes. (Here’s a look at the movie that won Best Picture every year at the Oscars.)

To determine the movies that have won the most Oscars over the years, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data from the Academy Awards Database, choosing only films that won at least five awards. Supplemental data on IMDb user ratings and Rotten Tomatoes audience and Tomatometer scores are current as of mid-February 2024. Note that the years given for each film are those of its release, not of the Academy Awards ceremony at which it won Oscars. Note, too, that the names of many categories have changed over the years.

The movies on this list cover an 88-year span, from 1934’s “It Happened One Night” to 2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

And while you’d think that the more nominations a film has, the more Oscars it’s likely to take home, things don’t always work out that way. Two of the aforementioned nomination leaders, “All About Eve” and “La La Land,” may have had 14 nominations each, but they only took home six awards apiece. Only three films have won every Oscar for which they were nominated: “Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) went 11 for 11, and “Gigi” (1958) and “ The Last Emperor” (1987) both won in all nine of the categories they were tapped for.
