The Best New Shows of 2023

The Best New Shows of 2023

Television offerings have become more diverse as cable and streaming services have provided opportunities for content from other countries to be seen on American television. And  audience reception has been strong for new foreign shows in 2023.

To determine the best new shows of 2023, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on audience reception from IMDb. Television shows that premiered in 2023 were ranked based on average IMDb user rating as of December 2023. In the case of a tie, the show with the greater number of IMDb user votes was ranked higher. Only shows with at least 1,000 user votes were considered.

Foreign films are well-represented among the 50 best new shows of the year. As a matter of fact, six of the 10 most well-received shows come from the Asian countries of Indonesia (“Cigarette Girl”), South Korea (“The Good Bad Mother”), Japan (“Blue Eye Samurai”), and India (“Farzi”). Farther down the list are 10 programs from the United Kingdom and Australia, a mix of thrillers (“The Gold”), comedy (“Funny Woman”), and black comedy (“Deadloch”).

Documentaries found favor in 2023, among them the three sports-themed docs “Full Swing,” “Quarterback,” and “Wrestlers.” Other popular series using a documentary theme are the mockumentary “Jury Duty” and “Great Kills,” a movie about documentarians chronicling the life of a hitman. (Click here for these are the 20 best documentary films of all time.)

Animation series proved to be popular, including “One Piece,” “Oshi No Ko,” “My Adventures with Superman,” and “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.”

Post-apocalyptic themes usually get a strong viewership, and 2023 was no exception, with shows such as “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” “Silo,” “Twisted Metal,” and “The Last of Us.” The latter show posted 474,232 IMDb viewers, by far the most of any program on our list. (Here is a list of the 20 best sci-fi films ever made.)
