The 25 Greatest Spy Shows in TV History

The 25 Greatest Spy Shows in TV History

More than just globe-trotting glamour, the most riveting spy shows capture the tense excitement of covert operations with an array of intriguing spycraft gadgets. In the realm of small-screen entertainment, top-tier spy thrillers have won over audiences with high stakes drama, Breakneck twists continuously raise the stakes, anchored by characters leading double lives which add complexity to gripping undercover missions.

The most compelling programs in the espionage genre keep viewers on the edge of their seats with spies confronting dilemmas as intricate as the technology they employ. With adrenaline-spiking action, exotic backdrops merely provide the backdrop to the elaborate ruses, shifting loyalties, and brink-of-disaster moments that have made these well-crafted spy stories appointment viewing for generations of fans.

24/7 Tempo reviewed data on audience reception from IMDb, an online movie and TV database owned by Amazon, to determine the best spy shows of all time. Spy and espionage shows were ranked based on average IMDb user ratings as of December 2022. Only shows with at least 4,000 user votes were considered. Data on series run and cast information also came from IMDb. (If you prefer the long form, these are the 30 best spy films of all time.)

While countless spy programs have earned both high viewership and critical praise, only a select few have secured their place among the top 25 in television history. To join the spy thriller elite, more recent contenders must live up to time-tested classics that have inspired film adaptations and multimedia franchises. Perhaps the most famous example remains “Mission: Impossible,” the trailblazing 1960s CBS drama that spawned a still-unfolding blockbuster action film series built around intricate heists and disguise-laden subterfuge.
