Vegetation, plant life, ecosystem, greenery – whatever name you prefer to use, there's no denying that life on Earth needs flora to survive and thrive. According to the National Science Foundation, there are approximately 435,000 unique land plant species on Earth, of which 40% are categorized as extremely rare. But not all plants are created equal. Some are incredibly beautiful that many know and love. Others are strange and unusual plants you never knew existed.

To populate this list, we looked at various plant species that have unique characteristics among plants. We tried to pick ones that would be less commonly known to the general population as these are the ones that are typically hardest to understand. We sourced opinions from plant experts and biologists to explain the details of the strange appearances or other features of these plants. (Also See 35 Easiest Houseplants To Care For)
