States Where Residents Have the Biggest Vocabulary

States Where Residents Have the Biggest Vocabulary

There are about 470,000 words in Webster’s Third New International Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary combined, though it is estimated that only about 170,000 are in common use. And while the average American adult is said to speak a total of between 7,000 and 20,000 words a day, the average number of unique words spoken is only about 1,000, according to the Harvard Advocate. (Here are 32 words people misuse all the time.)

That number is higher in some states than in others, however. To compile a ranking of the states where residents have the biggest vocabulary, 24/7 Tempo reviewed a report by LetterSolver, a site that helps people find commonly used words in word games. They analyzed millions of geotagged English-language tweets, reduced variations on the same word to a single form, and divided all words into samples of 1,000. They determined the number of unique words in their samples and calculated the mean number of unique words for each state.

The West, Midwest, and New England states have among the highest vocabularies in the nation. This tends to somewhat correlate with educational attainment as expressed in attainment of at least a Bachelor’s degree, and with median household income. Among the exceptions is New Mexico, fifth on the list for vocabulary size, but 11th-lowest in educational attainment and sixth-lowest in median household income.

States in the Southeast, with some of the country’s lowest educational attainment rates and median household income levels, tend to have lower vocabularies. Among the exceptions are Maryland and New Jersey, both in the bottom 10 in the ranking, though they have the highest and third-highest median household incomes in the nation, respectively, and New Jersey has the fourth-highest percentage of adults with at least a Bachelor’s degree. (These are the states where the most people have gone to college.)

The state with the broadest vocabulary is Hawaii, where 466 unique words are spoken out of 1,000 words in tweets. According to LetterSolver, Hawaiian and English are both official languages of Hawaii, and it is well-known that being bilingual helps promote cognitive strength. Children who grow up speaking two or more languages tend to outperform their peers in English by age 7.

It should be noted, however, that the site also computed the number of unique words for every 1,000 spoken for individual cities, and by that measure, 16 non-Hawaiian cities exceeded the Aloha State’s overall score. The city with the highest ranking was San Francisco at 477.1, followed by New York City at 476.1.
