Oscar-Nominated Movies You Can Stream for Free This Month

Nominations have been announced for the 96th iteration of Hollywood’s biggest annual ceremony, the Academy Awards, to be held on Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in L.A.

As has been widely reported, the nominations have generated not a little controversy – primarily around perceived snubs to “Barbie” star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig, and to the three stars (Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton) of Todd Haynes’s acclaimed “May December.” If, as the old cliché goes, it’s an honor just to be nominated, these present-day movie luminaries might rightly feel dishonored.

Throughout Oscar history, though, a great number of superlative performers have been nominated for their lead or supporting roles – some of them still famous today, some all but forgotten by modern audiences. While scoring an acting nomination (or award) for one or more of its featured players doesn’t necessarily mean that a film is essential viewing, it’s certainly fun, and often rewarding, to watch the work of the men and women who are singled out – and it’s possible to see a lot of this work for free.

To determine the movies featuring the best Oscar-nominated performances that are available to stream for free this February, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of early February 2024, weighting all ratings equally. We considered only movies with at least one acting nomination, whether or not it led to a win, limiting our choices to films with a minimum of 2,500 audience votes on either IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes and that are streaming on Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, Amazon Freevee, Vudu, or Crackle. Information on nominations and awards comes from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Oscar database. Data on streaming availability, also current as of early February, comes from the streaming guide Reelgood.

Few contemporary viewers are likely to remember performers on this list like Albert Basserman (on the shortlist as Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1940’s “Foreign Correspondent”) or Teresa Wright (a Best Actress nominee for 1942’s “The Pride of the Yankees”), but few will be surprised to be reminded that Tom Hanks in “Forrest Gump” (1994) and Nicholas Cage in “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995) were not only nominated but won for Best Actor in a Leading Role. (Though both were veteran performers at the time, here’s a list of actors who won an Oscar in their debut role.)

On the other hand, such luminaries as Ava Gardner, Laurence Olivier, and Marlon Brando were all nominated for films on this list but didn’t win the big prize. Whether or not they felt honored anyway is not known.
