Summer is practically here and that means ice cream season is underway. Sweltering heat waves will prompt long lines outside of a variety of ice cream shops, including old-style ice cream parlors and ice cream trucks. And each state is chock-full of shops that scoop out the cold, creamy stuff.
24/7 Wall St. relied on Google Reviews to find the most popular ice cream shop in each state. Ice cream shops with a 4.5 rating or above that have the most reviews were deemed the most popular. We assessed ice cream shops located in or around cities with at least 100,000 people, except in five smaller states.
The ice cream shops that appear on this list have caused quite the buzz in their surrounding communities and state. In some states with major metropolitan areas, the competition is cutthroat with hundreds, or even thousands, of different ice cream shops to choose from. For example, in California, among its 73 major cities, 2,149 ice cream shops have been rated and reviewed by users on Google.
In other states, the competition is sparse. Wyoming’s largest city and the state capital, Cheyenne, has a population of some 62,000 people. There are only two ice cream shops in and around the city that are rated on Google Reviews. The most popular ice cream shop in Wyoming is located in Laramie — about 50 miles west of the state capital.

To identify the most popular ice cream shop in each state, 24/7 Wall St. compiled a list of ice cream shops that were rated at least 4.5 out of five stars by Google Reviews users. We reviewed every ice cream shop that received a high rating in cities with a population of at least 100,000. Five states did not have a city that large, so we reviewed each of those state’s city with the largest population. Of those shops with at least a 4.5 rating, the ice cream shop with the most ratings from each state was considered the most popular. To be on this list, the place had to be classified as an ice cream shop or an ice cream parlor.
