Who Won Best Actress Every Year at the Oscars

Who Won Best Actress Every Year at the Oscars

Since the first Academy Awards Ceremony in the 1920s, women have shone bright in their skills and the lengths they are willing to go to in order to bring a character to life. As with any competition, many are nominated, but only a few win the ultimate prize of the Oscar statue. From the early forms of black-and-white moving pictures, the female lead has been a pivotal piece of storytelling. As the years have gone by, these actors have told stories of the marginalized, those suffering in silence, and expressed the pain and depths women go to in order to care for those that they love or to take care of themselves. These performances are timeless, and viewers return to them again and again to find something new to catch or to emulate.

Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, or Bette Davis may come to mind from the heyday of Hollywood. In recent years, Frances McDormand, Julia Roberts, Michelle Yeoh, and Jessica Chastain have brightened the Academy Awards stage to accept their award. All of these represent the years of work that went into the effort to produce an award-winning performance that will stand the test of time. Many names are mentioned in this list you may have never heard of, and some have repeated the award-worthy performance. One thing does stand out: the need for more diversity and highlighting what is sure to be outstanding performances from women of all races.

To determine who won best actress every year at the Oscars, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Actors who won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role were ranked chronologically. Once you finish this list, take some time to check out some of the most iconic photos of the Oscars.
