The Best Movies Set on the Ocean

Dramas, comedies, and other movies featuring ships or boats are typically filmed on a set in Olympic-sized pools, and the visual effects make the viewer feel as though they’re taking place on the ocean. Some feel far more realistic than others and have delighted fans.

Why can’t production companies just film a movie on the ocean? While it would be dramatic, storms, waves, and hazards like riptides can make it a dangerous location. Instead, they use safe — and large — pools where the conditions can be controlled. Outside of documentaries and reality shows, it’s unusual to find film crews out on the open water. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but they do come with dangers like these:

  • “Across the Border” (1914) – A horse crossing the Arkansas River stumbled and an actress and camera operator died.
  • “High Jungle” (1966) – While shooting a canoe scene on the Huallaga River, actors Eric Fleming (“Rawhide”) and Nico Minardos (“Mission: Impossible” and “Hondo”) fell into the river and Fleming drowned.
  • “Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.” (1966) – In this Disney movie, a wave hit the filming crew’s boat, and a cameraman drowned off the coast of Kauai.
  • “Waterworld” (1995) – Several things went wrong while filming this movie. Two actresses had to be rescued after they fell off the boat they were on, and lead actor Kevin Costner almost died when he was caught in a squall on his boat. Several others were stung by jellyfish.

So you can see why filmmakers opt to keep their productions off the high seas. With that in mind, we’re taking a look at the 40 best movies set on the ocean. (Learn more about one of the most famous ships in history by reading about famous people who were supposed to be on the Titanic.)

Methodology

To determine the best movies set on the ocean, 24/7 Tempo developed an index using average ratings on IMDb, an online movie database owned by Amazon, and a combination of audience scores and Tomatometer scores on Rotten Tomatoes, an online movie and TV review aggregator, as of May 2024, weighting all ratings equally. Only movies with at least 1,000 reviews on IMDb were considered, and documentaries were not excluded. Director information is from IMDb.
