The Best Local Sandwich in Every State

Exploring regional food specialties is one of the best things about traveling. Every area of the country has different dishes and cuisines that are specific to the region, but one thing that is universal is a great sandwich. From coast to coast, every state has a sandwich variation that might be worth going out of the way for.

Sandwich possibilities are limitless and can be made with any number of ingredients. With bread as a starting point, you can head in any direction from there. There are always the American classics, like peanut butter and jelly or grilled cheese. But sometimes you might want to dig into a giant meatball sub or a delicious lobster roll on a bun. These are all good choices and they are some of America’s favorite sandwiches.

Although none of the sandwiches listed are from fast food restaurants, if that’s your thing, here is a list of the most popular fast food chains in every state.

Certain sandwiches reflect the ethnic culinary traditions of a region, while others are influenced by local hunting, farming, or fishing practices. Some draw inspiration from regional barbecue styles, while others are homegrown inventions that have become wildly popular. No matter what your sandwich preferences are, there will be something on this list that will satisfy your cravings.

Alaska: Reindeer dog

California: French dip

Colorado: Slopper

Massachusetts: Fluffernutter

A beloved lunchtime treat for Massachusetts kids, the fluffernutter combines the sweet and savory flavors of peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff on white bread. It’s rare to find the fluffernutter in a restaurant, but it’s a staple at Springfield’s annual Eastern States Exposition.

Michigan: Traditional pasty

While it’s not exactly a sandwich, it is meat inside bread. The traditional Cornish pasty, or hand pie, is very popular in Michigan, where it was popularized by immigrant miners in the 1800s. The most traditional versions are filled with ground beef and vegetables.

Nebraska: Reuben

The Reuben is a deli sandwich loaded up with hot corned beef, melty Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian or Thousand Island dressing on toasted rye. It is a popular New York classic, but it’s widely believed that it was invented at the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha. It’s now a quintessential Nebraska sandwich, and March 14 is Reuben Sandwich Day in Omaha.

Nevada: Pastrami

Throughout Vermont, New Hampshire, and parts of Massachusetts, sandwiches on long rolls are referred to as grinders. The most popular grinders in Vermont are loaded up with steak and cheese. When you include salami or pepperoni, peppers, onions, and mushrooms, they’re known as “steakbombs.”

Oklahoma: Chicken-fried steak

Fried bologna sandwiches are mostly a Southern specialty, and especially so in South Carolina.
