Inflation in America keeps creeping in the right direction. It hit 7.0% in 2021 and inched down to 6.5% in 2022, but by the end of December 2023, it had sunk to 3.1%, thanks in part to lower gas prices. That’s good news, but consumers are still faced with higher-than-usual tariffs for such things as auto insurance, groceries, restaurant meals, and house and apartment rentals.
Whatever the individual category, it’s not surprising that people spending their hard-earned money expect value in exchange. To determine which major brands across four categories — apparel, automotive, electronics, and home and appliances —most people feel price their products fairly, 24/7 Tempo reviewed a survey on the subject just conducted by USA Today. (In another category, these are America’s most trusted food and drink brands.)
According to the results, 95% of the respondents reported that they sometimes get angry about prices, while 43% said they get mad about about them at least once a week. The main reason for their anger is that they remember a product having been priced lower on previous occasions.
They also said that even when they’re unhappy, however, they’ll still sometimes buy something for what they feel is too much money. Their reasons for doing so are the quality of the product, an urgent situation, lack of time to comparison-shop, or the absence of other options.
It’s perhaps not surprising that the brand whose products are considered to be the most fairly priced of all is one whose products are among the cheapest represented here — Sharpie pens. Sharpie is owned by Newell Brands, the wide-ranging manufacturing company, which also places two other brands — Rubbermaid and Coleman — on this list. There are a number of high-ticket brands here, too, though, in the automotive and electronics genres. (If you’re a car buff, check this story on the cars that defined the baby boomer generation.)
Our list covers only the 25 brands whose pricing is most appreciated by consumers, though USA Today included 100 brands in their survey. The losers in the ranking were Bonobos for apparel (48.3%), Mercedes-Benz for automotive (47.41%), Yeti for home and appliances (44.42%), and Beats by Dre for electronics (39.60%) — the lowest-ranked of any brand here.
